I checked the forums and the most recent info was 2 years old. We have 6 nights in Rome and my 18 year old would like to see the Ferrari museum. Is it worth burning a day and how much of a hassle is it to get there on public transportation. Thanks!
Here's a review on this forum from last week:

Never been there myself. We don't seem to get a lot of Ferrari tourists here, a few, but suggest you check the TripAdvisor forums which should have more info, maybe from locals.
I doubt that anything much has changed at Ferrari in the past two years. I've enjoyed it twice, years apart, but not as a day trip from Rome. Trains from Rome to Modena generally take about 2h 45m each way, with one connection, so that's a long day trip. From Modena train station, you can walk to the newer branch of the museum and/or take the museum's dedicated (but not frequent) shuttle bus to the traditional hub in Maranello.
This is all about the two museum visits, not a factory tour. The "factory" tour that they offer is a bus ride past the various engineering buildings and onto the test track, during lunch time. You don't leave the bus and can't take photos, so I only recommend it for the most dedicated fans, and not those whose time to visit is short.
My daughter traveled to Modena and visited both the Ferrari and the Maserati museums. If you like/need flashy, Ferrari is your stop. If you like/need opulence, Maserati might be a different and, perhaps, better bet. However, even if you rented a car, it's a 5-hour drive according to Google. It would be a better bet to go from Florence or Bologna on another visit for our tastes.
Lamborghini offers a factory tour in addition to their museum, but is even more of a hassle to get to.
