FCO to Naples by train

We will arrive FCO on a Monday morning and head to Naples directly. We’ll buy train tickets on arrival and not in advance because we don’t know how long it’ll take us to get through passport control, baggage lines and so on, or if the plane will land on time.

Trenitalia seem to be the only option to get from FCO to Naples on a single ticket.

We can take the 4-hr train for about €21 and arrive Naples around the time we can check in, 3:00PM. This option requires two changes, one at Rome Ostiense which gives us 9 minutes to find the train to Termini, then a second change at Termini with 15 minutes to find the train to Naples Centrale. Rome Ostiense station looks pretty big.
Q: Is a 9-minute window enough to navigate Rome Ostiense station? Would we better off giving ourselves a little more slack in case there’s a delay with the first train?

Another option is take a pricier 2-hr train (~€47), get to Naples earlier and tour free-style for about 3 hours until we can check in.
Q: Is there someplace in or near Napoli Centrale to hold our luggage for a few hours?

If someone’s done this before or knows the ropes, we’d really appreciate the perspective and experience.
Grazie.

Why not take the Leonardo Express to Termini - runs every 15 min
then a fast direct to Napoli Centrale?

Buy your tix when you land and have your bags
Use the Trenitalia app

Hotel will hold your bags before check in.

then a second change at Termini with 15 minutes to find the train to Naples

What site you are using to look the schedules up? This is the oddest route I have ever heard, there is a direct Airport train to Roma Termini every 32 minutes and a different train to Roma Tiburtina every 42 minutes. All bullet trains to Naples call at Termini and Tiburtina, who would ever tell a tourist to go via Ostiense?

Rome Ostiense station looks pretty big.

But it has 15 tracks and 7 platforms. You can walk from track 1 to track 15 in... 5 minutes? Add the time to go up and down the stairs with luggage in tow.

Another option is take a pricier 2-hr train (~€47), get to Naples earlier and tour free-style for about 3 hours until we can check in.

High speed trains go from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in 70 minutes. The LeoEx Airport Train takes around 30 minutes to get to Roma Termini. Add 15 minutes, the minimum transfer time offered by Trenitalia at Termini, and you can have lunch in Naples.

Otherwise - with a little luck - you can take the direct high speed train # 8335 from FCO to Naples. This train departs from the airport's station every morning at 9:38.

Is there someplace in or near Napoli Centrale to hold our luggage for a few hours?

There is manned left-luggage at Naples Centrale station, but it's expensive and, since it's chronically understaffed, their security process is quite slow. I'd just leave my stuff at the hotel's.

I've not done this myself but there is an express bus that runs between Fiumicino airport and Naples Centrale/Garibaldi every couple of hours. Tickets are running about $25.00 pp, the trip takes about 3 hours, and it's seeing generally positive reviews.

Here's an RS forum mention from someone who took it about 5 years ago.

Just thought I'd throw the option out there.

Except there is currently only one train per day that runs that direct Fiumicino>Naples route, edwardius. That's the 9:38 that Dario pointed out earlier. If the OP can make that train, fine but if not, they'll have to have a different plan. Even if their flight is scheduled to arrive early enough to catch it, they should have a backup plan in case of a delay or cancellation.

We all know how reliable air travel has been lately! 🙄

Yep, I'd linked that one (express bus) earlier in the thread.

Thank you, All. This is such a helpful, insightful forum, especially for first timers.

I found the Ostiense option on both Trenitalia and Omio, with Regional 20483 departing FCO at 10:27, arriving Ostiense at 10:58, then Regional 12531 departing 11:07, arriving Termini at 11:18, and finally Regional 21067 departing at 11:56 for Napoli Centrale. Apparently there are a few of these throughout the day. Yes, it's an odd one and somehow prices at €20.65. Now that I look at this through lenses aided by your comments, it’s kooky, no doubt. The €20.65 caught my eye and Dario’s remark made me realize it was an eyelash stuck inside.

The high speed #8335 direct Fiumicino>Naples would be super if we can make it. I’m taking a closer look at the Fiumicino Express bus as another back-up plan. Thanks again to all of you.
