electric mobility scooters in Italy(ROme)

Hi fellow travelers
We are doing a cruise in Italy in May 2015 and my friend has a knee problem since surgery. She has a scooter she can bring-but we are wondering if there is any place to rent one and also are the sight accessible with a scooter.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

I've not seen electric scooters being used in Rome. The streets and sidewalks are very rough so using one would be very difficult. Also, I don't know how you would get it on the train as there are very steep steps to get up and down. Most of the sites have elevators but I don't know if the corridors would be the right size for a scooter.

I don't know of any place that rents them.

I recall that Venice has a number of electric lifts on small canal bridges, but whether they are reliably maintained, I don't know. I believe they carry wheelchairs and may not have the power to do a scooter. I don't remember seeing many curb cuts at corners in Southern Europe, as you do in Northern Europe and the UK.

Why not ask the cruise line about a rentable scooter? As others have said, Italian cities are not very wheelchair or scooter (or pedestrian!) friendly. There are curbcuts, but frequently a car will be parked in the pedestrian crossing! Maybe a guided tour in each port would be you best bet. Advise the tour guide that your friend needs assistance. She won't be the first to ask.

Our experience is the same as others. Europe has not made the concessions to mobility issue as the US has. A few years we were very attuned to this issue because we were considering bring a relative who needs to use a wheelchair part of the time. We concluded it would be difficult to do so. We have seen people being pushed in wheelchairs but it is a struggle because of the uneven streets, sidewalks. Many times the sidewalk cafe is on the sidewalk leaving a very narrow to get by. You could attempt a wheelchair but a heavy, electric scooter is out of the question if using public transit.

We have never been to Hawaii or Alaska because my wife says we are not going until we have to use a walker or a wheelchair since those areas have the American Disability Act. Till then we are going to Europe.
