After spending our first 3 nights in Spoleto I want to drive a little further north for the next 3-4 nights. I am considering either Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna, or Assisi as a base. Probably would choose to stay in town rather than out in the countryside. Does anyone have a recommendation for a choice of these towns? Why? Looking for a pretty town with some good restaurant options. Otherwise our agenda is wide open. We will have a car. Thanks.
We spent two weeks in Spello and toured Umbria from there. Spello has wonderful restaurants, so many that it’s amazing for its size. It is so easy to drive to the other towns in Umbria from Spello.
What Suki said. We spent a week in Spello a year ago - loved the town.
Any recommendations for a nice hotel or B&B to stay at in Spello?
I enjoyed visiting Assisi (4N), Spello,
Montefalco & Bevagna.
Consider staying in beautiful Assisi.
I didn’t have a car but used public transportation so actually spent a few nights in Assisi and a couple of nights in Montefalco.
Montefalco & Bevagna are very small places without many restaurant options so I’d choose Assisi as a home base.
I’ll share this thread which contains great information about Assisi from Robert (Wilmington, DE)
Wishing you a wonderful trip!
Logistically Spello is the most central to visit those towns (and more), having very easy access to the freeway.
Assisi probably has more to do, being a bit bigger with more 'must see' sights.
What are the “must see” sites in Assisi?
With a car you do not have to change bases for your itinerary.
There are no must sees, anywhere. The best thing about Assisi is the hue and feel of the town at sunset.
A friend recently stayed in Spello, used local trains to visit a few other towns with the exception of Assisi. To see Assisi, they rented bikes to get there.
They loved Spello!
