Drive or Train from Rome to Sorento

Hi
Our plans are to fly into Rome & immediately drive to Sorrento for 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. We plan to stop in Cassino for the memorials & visit Pompeii & Herculaneum. Then drive last Rome to Civitavecchia for a cruise.

I drive every year all over Northern Italy and much of Mezzogiorno, so I have no worries there but does it make better sense to train around with 2 people? Can we get a sense of the Amalfi Coast and get to Pompeii & Herculean easily from Sorrento by train?

Also any sites we should take in On that route besides Cassini and Anzio?

Thnx

Thanks!

Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast [those towns described on www.positano.com], but further north. The easiest way to get there is a train to Napoli Centrale [a couple of hours from either airport with a change downtown], then one of the local trains downstairs [Garibaldi Station] or a driver to the Sorrento hotel [about €80]. The local trains stop at Pompeii Scavi [at the ruins].

FCO is Fiumicino Aeroporto. Garibaldi trains:

thanks for the very useful info & links. We thought we would stay in Sorrento & daytrip from there - including a drive along the Amalfi Coast - but I seem to be hearing that there's not much to do in Sorrento in winter.

Would you recommend to stay directly on the coast, say in Politano or Ravello ?

thnx!

There will be decidedly less to do in Positano or Ravello in winter
Lots of shops and restaurants will be closed

With a car Salerno is a much better choice that Sorrento. Salerno is actually on the Amalfi Coast and the most scenic area starts just a few kms from there. A good bit of the drive from Sorrento is inland until you come to the coast near Praiano. Salerno is car-friendly. Sorrento is not! It's hilly, with a one-way road system that loops around the center.

When's your trip? I've stayed in both places in February on separate trips. Sorrento's fine for Herculaneum and Pomeii by Circumvesuviana train (metro, really) but I think a car would be a liability. I stayed in Salerno with a car that I rented once I got there. I drove the AC - read about it here. In February traffic on the road was very light and I found lots of places to pull over to admire and photograph the views. Parking was cheap in the AC towns and I rarely had a problem finding a place, except in Positano.

A very good day trip from Salerno is to Paestum, stopping in the morning at Tenuto Vannulo buffalo farm with highly rated mozzarella (if you want to buy some get there very early or reserve in advance, they often sell out by noon, earlier on weekends I think). The best canolo I ever at was there and the gelato was wonderful too.

On the AC be sure to stop at Sal de Riso in Minori for to-die-for pastries. It's on the main road, a few meters from the public parking lot.

The AC is beautiful. I was

Hi - thanks for your thoughtful reply. Since you mention that Sorrento is not car-friendly, we are going to move our lodging up to the hills above the town (with free parking! 😊 ). We're now thinking of exploring Pompeii and Ercolano and then taking a full day to drive drive along the Amalfi Coast & staying overnight in Salerno as you suggested. appreciate the sights & stops you recommended.

anyone have experience driving to Pompeii & Ercolano & parking around there for the day? It looks like there are local underground and surface lots...

Any other "must sees," bearing in mind we'll be there in December?

thanks again!

Frankly, if you're planning on driving to Pompeii and Ercolano, the drive is on much better highways and takes a shorter amount of time from Salerno than Sorrento. At this time of year, stay in Salerno.

I would take the Fiumencino Airport express bus 'www.fiumencinoexpress.com'. It leaves right from the airport in Rome and stops at the bus station next to the Naples central station where you can board the train to Sorrento. Check their website for schedules. It costs 20 euro per person for the bus from Rome to Naples. The buses are bright yellow and run about every 2 hours.
