To get from one lake to another is not quick using public transportation.

As an example, from the west side of Maggiore (Verbania), to get to lake Orta, we would take a bus to Omegna, then train to Orta Miasino train station to see Orta San Guilio. To get to the city of Como, we’d take train to Gallarate, or Milan, then train to city of Como (2/12 hours). You’d always end up going south, changing trains, then back north to your alternative Lake Destination. Since these are regional trains, slower with all the stops. From Orta San Guilio to Varenna on Lake Como is a 3 1/2 hour train trip one way. And renting a car and driving wouldn’t be much quicker. (2 1/2+ hours)
If you are staying on Lake Garta, think about day trip (s) to Lago Maggiore instead. Ferries go all over the lake.
If you have more questions, PM me. RS book barely mentions Lago Maggiore, but IMO it is a hidden gem.
