Hi. Renting a Villa in Lucca for a week with friends. Would like some ideas of day trips from Lucca besides Florence and Pisa. We will be going on to Cinque Terre after Lucca. Would like to travel either by train or bus for the day trips. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
It sounds like you'll have enough time to discover the area pretty well. You could check out Pistoia, under an hour by direct train.
The Carrara marble quarry isn't served by train but you could engage a guide with a car. Sara Paolini is in the book ([email protected], ++39 373 711 6695). Nicola Musetti has also been recommended by forum users (++39 339 4510950 [email protected]).
I would definitely go to Siena by bus from Lucca, but to rent a car outside the walls would be very easy and then you could go to the Chianti road, Grieve, Volterra and even Vinci to the fabulous museum there! just a thought. Where in Lucca are you renting?
Thanks to you both for your replies. Marie, we are renting right outside Lucca itself, within 10 minute walk to town. So, sounds like it would be easy to rent a car then.

I would highly recommend San Gimignano, a beautiful town with towers, beautiful streets and views. We drove to Lucca from San Gimignano so I'm no help with the bus/train situation.
