Civitavecchia to Rome by Train

We are disembarking our cruise at Civitavecchia in July and want to know if navigating from the port to the train station to head to Rome (Termini station) is manageable with two suitcases (on wheels) and two carry-on bags. It sounds fairly easy to do without luggage but that won't be our situation. The cost difference between train fare and private transportation is huge.

It's only about 1/3 to 1/2 mile from the port entrance to the train station. Cross the street right away and keep the roadway between you and the water. That way there aren't any stairs to negotiate -- just a very slight incline as you approach the station. Can't remember if there are stairs to get to the tracks -- after a while all the stations sort of run together. At any rate, we've done this with the largest carry on bags and personal bags for each of us. It will probably depend on the size of your bags and how well you can piggy back them and still roll them acceptably well. It's definitely doable -- just depends on your comfort / discomfort / budget levels. If memory serves correctly, the roninrome.com site has a video of the walk.

I would disagree a little bit. We stay on the beach side till just in front of the station and then cross the street to the station. The beach side sidewalk is wider and a bit smoother. Unfortunately when you hit the station it is evaluated about a story or so. There will be a substantial amount of stairs to climb. The alternative would to be to use the road into the station. It is a long curvy ramp leading to the front of the station. It is obvious. Most of the trains are Regionale train taking about hour to Termini. It is small station and is quickly jammed with cruise passengers trying to buy tickets. SO, buy your Regionale train ticket at any other train station or travel agency on Italy. That you by pass the huge crowd trying to tickets, validate (time stamp) your ticket in the little yellow/blue/green box on the back of the station and get on the first R train head to Rome.

This is a frequently asked question so you might find some of the earlier responses helpful --

PS -- You might take a harder look at the amount of luggage. We have been on a couple of cruises out of Civi... and get by very well with a total of three, carry on size bags. One rolling and two backpack style of bag. Two rolling suitcases and two carryon bags is a lot of luggage to handle anywhere.
