Catania to FCO

Is it easy to get from Catania to FCO for an 11:00 am flight back to states? Planning for a 2024 trip and trying to decide if we need to overnight in Rome before returning home. Thanks in advance for your help.

You would need to be at FCO 8 am
Even if you can find an early flight to FCO the risk of flight delay etc is too great IMO

I would overnight in Rome

I wouldn't risk starting the morning of my US-bound flight down in Sicily vulnerable to Mount Etna.

I would go to Rome the day before.

If you have anything that gets between you and your flight from Catania, you will be stick buying new transatlantic flights. That would be too expensive for me to cover.

Thank you. Looks like we add another day to our itinerary. Anybody got a favorite place to stay that's easy to get to and from FCO if you're only going to stay a day?

If there is a flight around 6am it is possible, but risky. I’d rather have a more relaxed start to the day. If you don’t want to stay in a soulless airport hotel I recommend the Hotel Tiber in the nearby seaside town of Fuimicino, a 10 minute shuttle away. Or arrive in Rome in the afternoon and overnight in the city…..

A couple of ideas:

1) Take an afternoon / evening flight to FCO and stay at the airport Hilton. This prioritizes simplicity and ease - you’ll have a 10-15 minute walk from the Hilton to the terminal. Nice breakfast spread as well. I’m not sure I’d take the absolute last flight of the night however, as tempting as it may be, given the downside risk if it was cancelled.

2) Stay in Rome or nearby - Rome isn’t that far from FCO. This prioritizes one last partial day in Rome for some sightseeing. We faced a similar dilemma at the end of our trip (coming from rural Tuscany) and decided to stay in Rome the last night. It turned out to be a very enjoyable half day. Then we took a taxi to FCO the next morning.
