best way to get from train stations to hotels?

Hi all -
We will be doing multiple city visits with our family, traveling by train. The last time we did this was almost 10 years ago, and I meticulously booked hotels near the train stations so we wouldn't have far to go (many times we could talk or take the bus) to get to our hotel.

This time I would like to branch out and be able to get hotels in other parts of the cities. Are taxis readily available at train stations? Do you know if Italy has uber/lyft? How have you navigated this part of the travel before? (we are traveling with 6 kids, so we have quite the entourage to get from point A to point B).

Thank you for any suggestions/insights!

It would help to know which cities you will be visiting.

You will find taxis outside train stations in major cities - and we found a small rank outside the station in Lucca.

For that large of a group, you may want to consider having some use mass transit to get to the hotel [good practice for your trip], otherwise you would need two larger cabs when you factor in luggage.

Free Now and It Taxi are two apps that work in some major cities in Italy.

Here's a link addressing how Uber works there:

If there are 8 of you, you will need multiple taxicabs. Taxicabs are exempt from car seats, however kids under 12 must seat in the back seat and must be accompanied by one adult.

Taxi stands are in front of train stations. Whether there are taxi parked there or not, depends on the volume of travelers in that town. Large towns or towns with lots of visitors will have an ample supply of taxicabs sitting at the station. Smaller towns won't.
