Using Uber in Italy

Hello everybody,

my wife and I are going to Rome in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if anybody on this site ever used Uber over there? If so ,do I need to download a different Uber app?
Thanks in advance!

The Uber service you are familiar with in NorthAmerica where private individuals drive their own cars is illegal in Italy since 2015. Only licensed taxi and limo drivers can provide that service.

As a result Uber does provide a service in Italy (called Uber Black, Uber Van) but when you summon a car with Uber a licensed official black limo driver with a luxury car will show up and as a result the price will be higher than a regular taxi.

Since 2022 Uber also reached an agreement with the Italian Taxi Association (AssoTaxi) to jointly operate a service with the AssoTaxi app ItTaxi, with which you can summon a taxi in Rome. Basically you can now use either ItTaxi app or the UberTaxi app to summon an official taxi. The taxi fares will be the same. Be aware that the practice of hailing a taxi in the streets is not practiced in Italy, therefore if you try they won’t stop, because when a taxicab is passing by they are either going to pick up a passenger or they already have a passenger on board.

You can use a taxi by calling on the phone, using the ItTaxi app (or now UberTaxi), the FreeNow app, or walk to a taxi stand. If you are in a hotel the reception desk can summon one for you via internet also.

We used Uber Black in Rome a few times---a party of 4. We found the price to be very similar to a taxi and it was extremely convenient.
