Any information on the Borghese Gallery (after July) and on Augustus' Mausoleum?

We will be in Rome in September, and we've been watching to make a booking at the Borghese Gallery, but it hasn't moved past July 28th - which seems unusual at this late date. Is it going to close for renovations or something, does anyone know? Also, the projected opening date for Augustus' Mausoleum was April, but I don't see anything anywhere online with an updated timeframe or info - anyone out there having any better luck?

Augustus' Mausoleum was April

The tender for the last works closed on March 8, 2019. They asked to submit restoration projects to be terminated within 540 days from the day of designation. I don't know where you read they had to open in 30 days, but it seems a little optimistic. Are you sure they were not speaking about temporary openings between the second to last and the last stage of the works?

Anyway the great part of the Mausoleum is fake, rebuilt between the middle ages and the 40s. They are restoring it only because TIM decided to waste 6 millions euro.

hasn't moved past July 28th

July 28 is the last day of the Fontana exhibition, nobody else can purchase tickets so there isn't much to be worried about.

Hi Dario! The opening I am talking about is the information that is given right on the restoration website for the Augustus Mauolseum - the announcement of restoration was made in 2017 and ever since then (and on Wikipedia and everywhere else) it says the expected re-opening date after the restoration is April 2019. I'm not sure where that info you're quoting from is sourced, I would love to see that!

For the Borghese, I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean. Entry times for the Borghese have to be booked in advance for the 2-hour timeslots, and there are no timeslots showing past July for booking. That is unusual - in the past we have booked our slot months in advance. I don't know what the exhibit you are referring to has changed in that regard? I apologize, perhaps I am just not understanding what you are saying properly.

Cj, you can't trust Wikipedia. For instance, Wiki mentions ridiculous articles from The Telegraph and the Guardian that write about today's Mausoleum as if it had been actually built by the Romans. The great part was re-built in the 18th century when they converted it into a concert venue, then Mussolini finished the job in 1937 with steel and concrete.

) it says the expected re-opening date after the restoration is April 2019.

I couldn't find a single source in Italian later than May 2017 saying works were scheduled to finish in April 2019 and those sources were based on Tim's press releases. Restorers don't make such silly announcements "at the minute" because they never know what's hidden down there. Only somebody working in media relations for a Telephone Company can be so accurate...

I'm not sure where that info you're quoting from is sourced, I would love to see that!

Google translate this article: https://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cronaca/19_gennaio_22/tomba-augusto-diventera-museo-f64e8456-1db4-11e9-bb3d-4c552f39c07c.shtml After one year of works, at the end of step 1, taxpayers had to allocate 8 millions euro in addition to Tim's grant.

For the Borghese, I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean.

I don't know how else explain it, bookings open later after the end of temporary exhibitions. They could extend it or not, depending on Its success.

Thanks very much! I will just keep an eye on the Borghese to see when the next months open up! Too bad we won't get to see Augustus' Mausoleum this trip, but I suppose these kinds of things rarely stay on schedule :)

I had the same problem booking a Borghese entry last fall, the dates didn't open up for quite awhile. It was related to a special exhibit of Picasso sculptures, which were scattered around the museum with all the others (not very effectively I thought). I think the admission price was a little higher because you were getting the Picassos in addition to all the Berninis et al. So if the duration of the special exhibit is uncertain, they may be holding off opening up the dates till they know what to charge. (Or my theory could be completely wrong and it's something else entirely.)

A bunch of us on this forum had the same anxiety you do, but it worked out fine, I got my reservation several weeks before the trip. Hope it goes as well for you.

I saw the outside of the Augustus Mausoleum last November, seemed very much a work in progress, I'd be very surprised if it was gong to open anytime soon.
