Ancient Rome experts- Caesar's Palace or underground of Colosseum

For the Ancient Rome experts. I'll be in Rome early November, but I just bought the plane ticket so it's on my mind now. I'm looking at tours of the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine complex. I was less excited about these than some of the art but thought I'd get more out of the visit with one of the recommended tours. But now there are options that I'd like help with. The tours are either the Colosseum with underground/arena/third tier plus the Forum and Palatine, or the Colosseum with just first and second level plus Forum and Palatine with Caesar's and Livia's homes.

The Palatine interested me since, if I understand it right, that's where people actually lived. But how special is seeing these particular homes, or is this a very specific interest? Comparable to the Domus Aurea which is also an option that could take their place? Or how much more do you really get out of the Colosseum by going underground or to the third tier? Can these be seen from above and you're just getting a close up view, or do they add something significant?

Thoughts from anyone who has seen it all?

It's my understanding that the House of Augustus and House of Livia are closed for more extensive renovations - but check to see what the status is at the time of your visit.

The coopculture site states that they've suspended reservations for the House of Augustus and Livia "in view of the new project to develop the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill" but that "bookings made will remain active and valid." And interestingly enough, Walks of Italy are still booking tours. Could be there are exceptions for smaller groups/certain operators.

It's possible that their tours might be suspended as well, at some point, but you could ask about your chances for November?

It has been uncertain when tickets for Domus Aurea will be come available for the 2nd half of the year. There there are some anxious folks wanting to see it next month who are twiddling thumbs! 🤔

We took the Walks of Italy tour of the Colosseum, Forum and House of Augustus in July (2016) and are delighted we did. If they are still booking this tour (as the above poster noted), I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for the tips. It's the Walks of Italy that I was looking at, but I'll double to check the status for November. Wouldn't think they'd sell tickets if they can't get in, but better to ask. Trying to decide whether more detailed Colosseum (underground and third tier) or more Palatine (with the houses) would be be better is just too difficult.

As of right now the underground isn't being offered beyond the end of June so you may not have a decision to make. We'll just need to wait and see if they offer more tours and if you can actually get on one.
