Alternative to Rome.

We will be at Marco Simon golf course March 13-17, instead of staying in Rome what other areas can we visit, we need to be in Naples on March 20 for a flight to Sicily. We have been to Rome and dont want to be in the city, will need to use public transportation. Any thoughts ?

Are you looking for a place to stay while attending an event at the Marco Simone course in Guidonia Montecelio, or are you asking about a place to stay on the nights of March 18 and 19--or both?

We have the golf tournament covered we check out on 17th From Marco Simon. Don’t really want to stay in Rome. Thinking we could get on the train to Naples. But wonder if there’s any where worth visiting between Rome and Naples. Naples isn’t necessary on my list of places to visit. Just need to be at airport on morning of 20th for Sicily.

It is much closer to Rome, but have you been to both major attractions in Tivoli? Also "too close", to Naples, I'm interested in Caserta, but have not been there yet.

EDIT:
Have you read the recent Anzio posts? A flight attendant posted a similar question this year, but I don't have a link. (Search box top left, blue)

Could you elaborate--have you been before? Based on reputation? Naples has outstanding cultural attractions and restaurants--it is the most obvious choice, so knowing why you want to avoid it would help.
It's only a few nights, and it is going to be vastly more convenient (especially using public transport} to get to NAP airport on the 20th if you choose Naples.

Part of the problem when looking for a stop between Rome and Naples is that the train is direct. If you want to reconsider the car, this Italian food writer recently detailed a food-focused (but not just food) road trip: https://katieparla.com/a-gastronomic-road-trip-from-rome-to-naples/
It might offer some ideas.

There may be some slower regional trains with stops if you want to look into that, but if your flight to Palermo is very early, you'll need to get to Naples anyway. I don't know if it would be worth the research, but for example if you went to Formia, you could then go to Gaeta (not sure of transport logistics).
