48 hours in Anzio

Hello from Rome. We are thinking about taking the train from Rome Termini to Anzio for a 48 hour visit. Does anyone have any experience they can share? Is the train central to the town? What’s a good place to stay? On the beach?

We have not been able to find a lot of details on a trip so we’d appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Month of year?
Visitor number and ages?

Number of Days in Rome itself?
Number of trips to Italy?
General itinerary for trip?

We are in Rome for a month. We’ve been to Ostia Antica and Orvieto, we’re heading to Bergamo in a couple of weeks. The two of us are looking for an overnight experience via train from Rome. Quiet. Scenery. Seafood. History. WWII.

Clean and quiet place to stay. A view would be nice.

Does this help?

Bumping this up- given how close Anzio is to Rome there seems to be startlingly little mention of it on the forum.

We have a number of Italian (especially Rome) specialists on the forum- some of whom must have been there and have decent knowledge- given it's WW2 importance, apparently lots of Roman ruins, seemingly beaches and a ferry port/fishing harbour.

Yes I'm looking for a potential excursion which isn't Rome, having had an e-mail offer of a Med Cruise calling at Civitavecchia for about £50 a night, so am doing due diligence on the thought. And am amazed to see so little (recent or past) on here.

To answer one of the original questions Google Maps shows me that the railway station is pretty central.

OP here. So we did stop overnight in Anzio. Here’s what we found:

This town doesn’t have lots of ancient architecture or fancy hotels. It does however have a fabulous beach and awesome restaurants. In fact, we had a magnificent — pretty elegant — lunch at Ristorante Turcotto, which is still owned by the family that founded it in 1816. Great food and awesome service.

We also had apertivi at sunset on the beach and it was one of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen.

The train is easy and convenient, and the Commonwealth cemetery is a short walk from the station.

Bottom line — Anzio is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Rome, and worth a day or overnight stay.

Another option for a quick and easy trip from Rome (by train) is Frascati. Check out a recent (October) post that describes this charming little town. SamA (a poster) and I spent a lovely 24 hours there. Check it out.
