Looking to stay for a week in June was wondering if anyone here has stayed in an Agriturismo that they would recommend. Interested in any area from San Gimignano down to Pienza and in between as base to relax and visit some of the hill towns. Thanks in advance!
I love Cretaiole near Pienza, but ever since Rick discovered it and featured it online it’s very difficult to get booking. If you have a car you might try Antica Olivea near Orvieto. It’s not quite in your geographic area but is lovely. And twice a week you can have dinner there, which is a terrific, locally based experience. We enjoyed it tremendously.
If you are looking for a relaxing base to explore from, try staying at Fonte Martino (www.fontemartino.com) in Montepulciano. It’s about 15 minutes from Pienza. It’s a b&b, not an agriturismo and was very relaxing when we stayed this past summer. You will definitely need a car to do the exploring with because they are in the countryside just outside of town.
If you don’t have a car and will depend on public transportation, I would suggest staying at Charming Homes (www.charminghomesmontepulciano.com), which are apartments in Montepulciano. It’s been a few years since we stayed there, but they were nice when we did.
Sorry for not suggesting any agriturismos, but we haven’t had the best experiences and tend to go more of the b&b or apartment route. Hope this helps!
If you are looking for a small one-family only agriturismo, we had an excellent experience at I Rosetti. 10 minute drive from Pienza, next to Montepulciano. This is a little east of the area you mentioned, but we had a wonderful stay at Castillo di Verrazzano which is just outside of Greve.
It was a very convenient base to explore Tuscany and it is right on the famous SR222, the Chiantigiana road. The rooms are comfortable and quiet and the rates are reasonable. Be sure to add breakfast for a small additional fee. Their breakfast is to die for, with luscious home grown items, including wild boar salami, cheese and breads.
Whether you stay there or not, be sure to sign up for a winery tour and their lunch food and wine tasting. Plan to make an afternoon of the tasting and visit to nearby Greve. Also plan to skip dinner that day, you'll be full from lunch!
We stayed at Fonte Bertusi (https://www.fontebertusi.it/) outside of Pienza a couple of years ago, and loved it. Would definitely return. Happy to answer any specific questions you have.
