Advice for rental car pick up and return -traveling from Florence to Montepulciano to Sorrento

Hello,
I am finalizing my trip to Italy, May 13-28. We will be in Florence for a few days, then travel to Montepulciano. After Montepulciano, we are traveling to Sorrento. I am wondering whether it is better to rent a car in Florence, return it in Florence, and take the train to Sorrento, or rent a car from another location and drive farther south to return it, rather than backtracking to Florence. I realize there are a number of options, looking for the easiest. It is our first time traveling and driving in Italy.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

I personally would not back track. Even if there is a fee, the time saving would be worth it.

I have never done that drive, but have driven in all areas you are visiting. Driving is straightforward. I generally did not use the autostrada, preferring the back roads. However, the freeway is fast and easy driving, if expensive.

Leave time to explore on the way and remember to get an International Driver Permit.

Have a great trip.

Thank you! One more question: do you recommend driving to Naples or Sorrento, or taking a train from another location?

Drop off fee will be about $75US (Europcar through Autoeurope)

The drop off fee varies depending on the company. Sometimes is $0, lately, like last year, I paid 15€ with Europcar. That is the highest I’ve ever paid, but I don’t know if it increased this year.
.I rent through AutoEurope, but the drop off fee is paid locally, not to AutoEurope when you purchase the contract (generally a credit card charge debited to your card when you return).

Montepulciano is substantially further south than Florence (at least 1.5-2 hours on a good day without traffic), therefore in your shoes there is no way I would backtrack to Florence.

Your better options are:

Return the car in Chiusi, at the Chiusi Chianciano station, and take the train from there. Chiusi is very close to Montepulciano. This option would minimize driving, however be aware that the only option in Chiusi is Avis-Budget, which has an office near the Chiusi station. The office is a small franchise, therefore they are open Monday through Friday and Saturday morning only. They also observe a midday break at linch time.

Drive all the way to Sorrento and return the car in Sorrento. Most major companies have an office there. They are not large offices, so they observe the opening times similar to Chiusi.

I use AutoEurope (a broker/consolidator) when I rent in Italy. Give it a try. Enter as pick up location FLORENCE ALL LOCATIONS, enter as drop off location CHIUSI or SORRENTO. Obviously the Chiusi option will display only Avis-Budget deals.

Another drop off option, if you return it on Sundays, is the Naples airport, which is always open. However you then need to incur the extra time and expense from there to Sorrento.

You can pick up car in Florence and drop it in Chiusi (Avis/Budget)
Chiusi is on the trainline about 45 min from Montepulciano.

If you drop there you will have a long train trip to Sorrento- change in Rome then again in Naples to the local Circumvesuviana. Not something I would like to do.

OR just drive all the way to Sorrento. Europcar is right on the main drag as you enter town so it’s an easy return. I believe Hertz is also right there. You can probably walk from either to your accommodations- as long as you are staying in center.
The drive is all freeway and very easy. We drove from Sorrento to Orvieto last fall- no issues at all.
I would not drop in Naples- too hectic.

Since this is your first time driving in Italy be sure to do your homework about ZTLs, parking, speed cameras, tolls, etc. All drivers must have an IDP. Have a designated driver if you plan to wine taste.
We always book our cars with AutoEurope and purchase Full insurance/no deductible.

Your previous post indicates you had plans to visit Serrone? Is this still the case?

Thank you so much for all the feedback! I think we will look into driving to Sorrento, which seems to be the easiest.

Update:
Travel plans: Montepulciano to Sorrento to Rome

Yes, we are planning to visit Serrone. If we decide to take the train to Sorrento, we will do a day trip to Serrone from Rome. If we drive to Sorrento, as we are leaning towards, we could stop in Serrone along the way.

Thank you again!

Seems like keeping the car and driving to Sorrento is best plan if you want to visit Serrone
Looks like it’s less than an hour off the freeway on your way to Sorrento-about halfway from Montepulciano
Depends how long you want to spend in Serrone

Definitely less expensive than hiring a driver to/from Rome
