5 Nights in Bolzano in Mid October for Solo Female Traveler

I’m taking a 10 night trip to Italy; the first half I plan to stay in Bolzano. I’ll be flying into MXP. The second half will be in Milan as I already started a thread about that.

I’m looking at 4 hotels from RS’ most recent Italy travel guide: Parkhotel Laurin, Hotel Greif, Stadt Hotel Città, & Hotel Figl.

They are all walking distance from the train station & have double rooms. While cost is always a consideration, which can any of you recommend from your own experiences? Do any of these include a visitor card that includes transportation within the Dolomite region including cable car up the mountains? That could be a ludicrous question but I thought I’d ask! I have emailed all 4 asking for their best rate.

Thank you!

Hello,
Our family of 5 adults stayed in Bolzano during the RS Alpine My Way tour in June of 2024. Our fabulous luxury hotel was Stadt Hotel Città. Most amazing hotel I've ever stayed ~ with top notch service. The restaurant was incredible and the concierge personnel were outstanding. However, for location to the Dolomites, it was about a 45 minute bus ride on twisty-curvy roads. The hotel offered a card for the area plus bus transportation. With that being said, I will only stay in Castelrotto from now on when visiting the Dolomites. Extremely close proximity to the lifts and a charming, beautiful town.

Enjoy!

Mitzi, isn’t there a cable car in Bolzano that climbs a mountain called the Ritten cable car? I would not like that bus ride!

Great trip report, Bradamant.

Yes, the Ritten lift connects Bolzano to Soprabolzano, but many visitors want to go to Alpe di Siusi, and that involves a bus ride from Bolzano to the bottom of a lift.

I stayed at the Greif in 2024; it didn't provide a free transportation card, but you can buy one from the local tourist office.

I stayed at the Laurin back in 2015; it didn't provide a transportation card, either, but that policy might have changed.

Both hotels were quite nice/fine. I'd say the Laurin is more grand-old-dame. However, I am not picky about hotels, and both those places were far above my usual standard (I had a roommate at the Greif with whom to split the cost). I am not your best source for comments on the better class of hotel. I'd recommend checking for ratings and reviews on booking.com. I find those typically very reliable, because you can't leave a review there unless you've stayed at the property.

I believe the OP is conflating a couple different transportation cards. The confusion is reasonable -- not at all a ludicrous question. First, there is a Val Gardena mobil card that hotel guests in the Val Gardena area are given for free. It covers bus lines in the region, including the bus from Ortisei to Bolzano. However, from other responses above, it sounds like hotels in Bolzano are not included. Second, you can buy a Val Gardena lift card that covers a number of different cable car type lifts in the Val Gardena area (not in Bolzano) for a set number of days; price varies with number of days. This pass might be season specific -- I am not sure. FYI, the bus station where you would get a bus to Ortisei or elsewhere into the Dolomites is just down the street from the train station so if your hotel is convenient to the train it will be equally close to the bus.

edited to add: I forgot that you said mid October. Most of the cable car lifts in the Dolomites will be closed for the season by mid October. I stayed in Ortisei the very beginning of October 2024. Some lifts were already closed but more were closing by the end of that week. There was some sleet and snow while I was there (but I had a great trip) and that was not even the first snowfall of the season, so watch the weather and plan accordingly.

We stayed at the Hotel Feichter in Bolzano as part of a Rick Steves tour. Rooms were large and very modern. Walking distance to train station, bus station, and Ritten/Renon cable car. The provided a "Bolzano/Bozen Card", which is a Sud Tirol guest pass (www.suedtirol-guestpass.info). It covered local buses, as well as the Ritten/Renon cablecar.

The hotel provided an excellent bagged lunch in lieu of breakfast when we left early to catch the bus to the Seiser Alm cable car (40 minute bus ride). I am sure they are also available for a fee if you have breakfast as well. Seiser Alm cable car is not included in the Bolzano card. It cost 24 Euro roundtrip. The Alpe di Siusi is great hiking.

Enjoy your trip!

I think the Sud Tirol guest pass will also get you to Merano. Merano is a great visit.

I stayed at the Stadt Hotel Città as a solo female traveler in December 2017. I absolutely loved their breakfast spread each morning and I remember the restaurant was really nice as well. It was a good value and the staff were friendly - they held my luggage after check out as my train didn't leave until later my last day there.
