Looking for a Local Restaurant away from St Mark’s Square in Venice

Hello everyone,

My wife and I will be staying two nights in Venice at Hotel Rio this June. We would like any recommendations you might have on restaurants away from St Mark’s Square, that locals might frequent for dinner or lunch. A small restaurant with authentic Venetian food, could be a hole-in-the -wall, would be great. Thank you, in advance.

In the Rialto Bridge area consider Trattoria Da Marco Valla Fava on Calle Stagneri. It is definitely pricy so you might want to do lunch there rather than dinner. Some of the best sea food ever!! Try to eat inside rather than outside. The place has been around at least 50 years so they must be doing it right. Also in the Rialto area (on the other side of the Grand Canal) when walking to Piazzale Roma is an out of the way place named Pane Vino e San Daniele on Calle Dei Boteri. Definitely a hole in the wall local place, good food, good house wine, and not expensive at all.

Canal side places are usually overpriced and under quality. Especially in the Rialto Bridge area. There is an exception. You might want to try Trattoria Da Giorgia ai Greci. It is very close to San Marco, but well away from the crowds. A bit pricey, but most places in Venice are, and the food is really great.

Google maps street view is a great tool to locate these places and "walk" to them ahead of time.

Between St Marco and the Rialto is Osteria alle Testiere
We’ve been going since 1997 it’s fabulous.
The owner, Luca, is great.
Must book way in advance

Vini da Gigio in Cannaregio. It is on a small side canal. We have been there many times.
Also, Ristorante Anice Stellato in Cannaregio.
They were neighborhood places near our rentals, both wonderful.

We also enjoyed a great meal at Osteria Mocinego, on the recommendation of our apartment host. My husband still talks about their lightly fried vegetables, and he’s not even a big vegetable fan!

If you’re looking for great sandwiches from a hole in the wall place near the Rialto bridge, we had amazing sandwiches at l’Bicaro de’Bischeri. No seating, but you can eat at a small bar area or take it to go. My husband rolled his eyes when I suggested sandwiches, but we still talk about how fabulous they were. They have cichetti also.

Second vote for Osteria alle Testiere. However, they are very difficult to get a reservation if you don't book far in advance. The other recommendation is Al Covo: https://ristorantealcovo.com/. This is a family owned and run restaurant that serves classic Venetian food. The owners, Cesare (chef) and Diane (hostess) make you feel at home. It is about 10-15 minute walk from St. Mark's Square.
