In early September, we will be driving between Westport and Donegal town (roughly 2 hours of driving but have the whole day open) and wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions of what to stop and see along the way.
If you're a fan of William Butler Yeats, he's buried at Drumcliffe Church, about halfway between Westport and Donegal. Near the church is a high cross with interesting carvings, and the church itself is beautiful. Not a long stop but very convenient to the N15.
I enjoyed visiting Sligo; it has a nice Abbey and a museum to visit, and the walk along the river is pleasant, with several places to eat and enjoy the view. If you’re interested in W.B. Yeats, there are a number of places to see. Benbulben mountain is amazing to view, and you can explore trails and small country lanes around the base for different perspectives. I had a nice long chat with a local farmer while walking along a lane to photograph Benbulben from a different angle.
This earlier thread discusses several things to do in the Sligo area:

Hello from Wisconsin,
My wife and I never pass up a megalithic antiquity. SW out of Sligo is Carrowmore Cemetery. Not so far away and the best part of it is Queen Maeve's grave. Climb up to her grave and ask yourself how many people it took to carry all those bowling ball sized stones to the top.
Geologically speaking there is the Gleniff Horseshoe and Eagle's Rock.

Fairy Bridges, Glencar Waterfall, Benbulban Viewpoint are on our plan. A little off the direct route are the Carrowkeel Tombs, a cluster of mini-NewGranges without the tourists.
