We’ll be visiting Sligo Town in County Sligo. Rick does not mention it in his Ireland tour book, so any hotel/B&B, restaurants, and sightseeing recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hi from Wisconsin,
Here are two places to visit near Sligo City. Both are out of town a ways.
Queen Maeve's Grave. It was a windy, rain filled day. My wife went to the top of the grave and when she came down she looked like Sigourney Weaver after the electrical shock in Ghost Busters. A very empowering feminist event for her.
Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. Now it may seem as though there is a theme here. Everyone knows Stonehenge. Ireland along with France and Portugal and other places are filled with prehistoric megalithic monuments if you go looking for them. As long as you are visiting the queen, you might as well stop by for the big stones.
The Southern Hotel is a classic railroad hotel.

Sligo tends to be ignored by many visitors and often by the guide books. There's lots to see and do - too much for me to list, so I'll direct you to two website instead.

Even taking out the duplicates, this still gives 19 things to do.
The Carrowkeel Tombs in Sligo are one of our favorite all time things to do in Ireland. Beautiful hike, slight hunt for them, many tombs, and absolutely no one else there. Felt like an archeologist finding them for the first time. There's a great Youtube fairy tale that uses them as a backdrop:

Three things I would recommend outside of Sligo Town:
There is a cool castle in Ballymote, a town of probably 1,500 residents in the southern part of the county. Great pubs here. I would not hesitate to stay in this town again.
More significantly, Irish music is practically a religion in a town called Tubbercurry, also a town of probably 1,500 people not far from Ballymote. There is an Irish music school there: http://www.westerndramafestival.com/south-sligo-summer-school#:~:text=%2C%20Tubbercurry%2C%20Co.-,Sligo,full%20with%20informal%20music%20sessions. If you ask around, my guess is that Irish music is played in pubs throughout the town.
I would also not hesitate to stay in Tubbercurry, though I only drove through it once. It was a beautiful town.
- There's a park of several dolmens in Sligo. This shows all or most of them: http://www.carrowkeel.com/files/dolmens.html
Enjoy beautiful Sligo. I loved it.
