Hello there
My husband and I will be in Dingle for two nights. I am not sure if I should stay right in the town or more the peninsula. Not sure of the geography at all and the distance. We will be going next June. We will have a rental so if it is worth staying on the ocean, it shouldn't be an issue to drive to town.
I personally prefer staying in town. Our first visit we stayed just out of town and had to drive in. It would have been nice to be able to visit pubs in the evening and not have to drive afterwards. Let’s just say that my husband enjoyed himself while I was the DD. When we returned we stayed in town so we were able to take advantage of having a car during the day and walk around town at night.
I am with the previous poster. Heading to Dingle in Sept and staying in town for all those reasons.
thank you so much, so appreciate that. In town it is :)
Hello! We stayed in Dingle 3 nights, August 14, 15, & 16, 2024. We stayed at Dunlavin House B&B. It's situated in the beautiful seaside town of Dingle, County Kerry overlooking Dingle Harbour. Here is a review I wrote for them:
"Dunlavin House in Dingle was my favorite stay in all of our two weeks in Ireland! Marian and Aidan (her staff, LOL) were gracious, entertaining, and oh so friendly. I would love to have been able to sit and talk with them on many more topics than we were able to cover in the three days/nights we were blessed to be able to spend with them in their beautiful and comfortable B&B. Delicious breakfasts, gorgeous views, home away from home comforts and wonderful hosts made for an unforgettable stay at Dunlavin House."
We also had a rental car, but we were able to also walk to town from the B & B, too. This allowed us to use Dingle as a base for sightseeing and side trips. We had spent the night before in Kenmare, did most of the Ring of Kerry on the way to Dingle, and then checked into the Dunalvin House B&B in the late afternoon, ate dinner in Dingle. The next day, we explored the adorable town of Dingle, shopping and dining, so much fun! The next day, we did the Slea Head Loop Drive, which is every bit as beautiful and interesting, maybe even more so, than The Ring of Kerry! The Great Blasket Center was so interesting and more amazing views of Skellig Michael (super special if you are a fan of Star Wars). Then, the awe-inspiring, Gallarus Oratory. We ended this day with dinner at The Fish Box and a visit to a pub. Just perfect! The following day we visited the Cliffs of Moher (via a ferry) on the way to Galway.
PS Free parking on the streets is hard to find. After 6:00PM the main parking lot next to the harbor is free. That's why we walked to and from town on our second day.
If you have any questions, I am happy to answer, if I can.
thank you so much for the wealth of information. So very much appreciated. There were a couple of things we were very interested in and after your comments we will definitely go there such as Slea Head Loop drive and the cliffs of Moher. We will also go to the Gallarus oratory now, perfect. We are also heading to Galway after Dingle. I've heard really good comments about Out of the Blue restaurant which requires reservations. Thanks for the tip on The Fish Box. Quick question the drive on Slea Head Loop, is it a little scarry. My husband is a tad afraid of heights. We used google maps to get a birds eye view on the roads and they didn't look too bad.
thanks again
Hello! So glad my comments could help inform your plans a little bit. My brother-in-law did the driving. The owners of the B&B suggested taking the ferry to The Cliffs of Mohr via Kilrush (N67). It saved us some driving and was very low-stress and on-time.
Since you are driving, I highly suggest a road atlas. We used Collins Comprehensive Ireland Road Atlas. Though we had downloaded driving directions from Google Maps before our trip, there were questions and internet connectivity was sometimes slow or non-existent depending on where we were. The atlas definitely clarified things for us. We actually had the Google Maps directions and the atlas open at the same time. I don't mind sending our copy of the Atlas to you, if you would want it. I have no further need for it.
To answer your question re driving, I'm glad I wasn't driving! Regarding heights, the only times I felt heights could be an issue, weren't when we were driving. It was standing on cliffs and such, but you just don't get too close to the edges. At The Cliffs of Mohr, there was a wall that kept you from the edges. I know there are places along the cliffs where there are not walls, but we didn't go there. We stayed by the welcome center area. I hope that helps!
Let me know if you want me to send you the Atlas!
Good morning
thanks again for the info. I would love a copy of the atlas. That would be wonderful. I don't want you to go to much bother though. I could download it also if that's a possibility.
We went to Out of the Blue on our free night in Dingle on a RS tour. We made reservations at least two weeks ahead of time and could only get very early or late. We saw many people turned away without. It was very good.
We loved Dingle. Also suggest going to the Blasket center. It was fascinating
