Schull area, County Cork

We are thinking of exploring an area of Ireland we haven't seen yet: Skibbereen to Mizen Head. I've heard it's beautiful. Does anyone have suggestions on touring or accommodations?

It's a picturesque area and one that's well off the beaten tourist path, if that appeals to you. Just as pretty and even less well known than the Beara peninsula just to the north.
There are beautiful seascapes everywhere you look - especially along the drive out to Mizen Head - but no real "destinations". It's more about gentle meanders and casual explorations along the seashore - all in all it's a pretty laid back part of the country.
The village of Baltimore is one option for a central base from which to explore the surrounding area. The town itself has an interesting history - it was virtually depopulated during a raid by Barbary pirates in the 17th century. We were there during one of the summer festivals and it was pretty crowded, due primarily to the small size of the place when any gathering of consequence is guaranteed to fill things up. Supposed to be good whale watching tours there too, though we never looked into it. Don't know much about Schull but the Mizen Head peninsula is wonderful, and lord knows you wouldn't have to deal with any crowds.

Only caution is to be aware that the roads are all those narrow, twisty turny things that rural Ireland is famous for. Can check them out in advance by using the Sreet View feature on Google maps.

And you might have better luck getting responses if you re-post this in the Destinations Q&A section rather than here in Hotels and Restaurant Reviews.
