Hi:
We have a cruise around Ireland in August and have a day or two in Dublin beforehand. Any tips where to stay so that we are close to the cruise ship docks? Thanks,

Personally, I would never choose to stay near docks; usually they are in an industrial area.
Look at Buswells in the city center .

Checking Google Earth, I see a cruise ship docked on the north bank of the Liffey, and nearby this hotel, this hotel and this hotel. I have no experience with them, and don't know for sure that the dock I see is the one you'll be using. The cruise line can tell you where the dock is, and Google Earth or Google Maps can help you find accommodations nearby.
Like Suki, I'd rather be in the heart of Dublin than out by the docks. Buswell's is a good hotel with a very good location, and there are many others. I'd take a taxi to the dock on the embarkation day.

The big cruise ships dock down towards the Ferry Terminals, deep in the docklands. There are no hotels close by. Any hotel you choose will be either a taxi ride, or a 15 to 20 minute walk from the end of the LUAS tram line at The Point.
Signs actually say you are not allowed to do that walk past the Seaman's Mission- signs which I just ignore.
The rare smaller cruise ship will go further up the Liffey, but that is very much the exception. Been there several times.
There is no terminal building as they use commercial docks- it will just be a marquee on the dockside.
You will also have to take a shuttle bus from the entrance to the individual dock to the ship nowadays (walking on the dockside was banned a few years ago)- your line may or may not run a bus from the City Centre (usually from Merrion Square).

Hilton Garden Inn Dublin Custom House. Not at the cruise port, but along the river. It isn't hard to get to central Dublin either by walking or taking the tram a few blocks away. One nice feature is , unless the route has changed, the bus from the airport stops directly in front of the hotel.
Regarding Buswell's- people either love it or hate it. How do you feel about night noise?

We didn’t have any noise and we are very fussy about that.
