We are hoping to stay at one or more castles as we explore the island next spring. Nothing fancy necessary. Do you have any castles you would recommend?

Castle stays are generally fancy, and very expensive. We stayed at Dromoland Castle, near Shannon, about 21 years ago. It was a big splurge at over $400/nt way back then. I can’t imagine what it costs now.

We stayed at the Abbey Glen in Clifden. It's somewhat like a castle.

Years ago on my first visit to Ireland (1992), friend and I stayed at Ashford Castle. Extremely nice but it's now running +/- €1000/night depending on your dates. Back then the horse stable was the old Quiet Man movie set; a lot of fun to ride the trails around it.

Dublin’s Clontarf `Castle Hotel has reasonable rates ($130-$340 in Spring) and is less than three miles from Dublin’s city center.
