Spectacular news to get 3 weeks before a vacation for 4 planned to Iceland. Fuming...furious...shocked...
Really sorry to hear that you got caught in the meltdown, 13maitland. You are not alone but having company in the misery doesn't make it any less miserable. Hope you purchased some sort of trip insurance? :O(
Oh, and there's another thread on the subject over in the Transportation forum.

Travel Insurance?!?!?! Why? Muhahahahah. Never. What could happen-your airline go belly up?
I would reserve all your energy into rebooking with another airline and getting compensation (remember that their own employees are affected too, and that's a loss of a job, not merely vacation). I would try with your credit card first. I was able to get charges immediately removed from some ill-chosen third party I used to reserve hotel rooms in Croatia (that also went belly up and I learned of this the last minute, and not from the third party).
Airlines, like any other businesses drowning in debt and no way out, do go belly-up - I was sorry to see Air Berlin go a few years ago. Good luck.
Even more disappointing than Wow stranding passengers and booking flights up until today is the fact that RV/camper van rentals in Iceland aren't understanding to what is going on. Reserved an RV two days ago for a week...and they are refusing to refund the deposit. I'm absolutely furious.
Agnes is right-I've found credit cards very helpful for canceling charges in dodgy situations. As much as I feel for the passengers, all the employees lost their livelihoods which is even worse and unlike the chairmen, don't usually have vast financial wealth to fall back on.
I will warn that Icelander/Finn Air airfares have increased due to Wow's implosion.
You might still be entitled to some form of refund if you paid with a credit card.
I'm sure you got this notice from the airline but just in case....

We've never gone to Europe without trip insurance - for medical coverage if nothing else - but I understand that a lot of folks do.

But you still have several weeks to try and re-book your flights so I wouldn't cancel everything YET? It's also not the RV rental company's fault that the airline went under. If you just booked 2 days ago, what sort of cancellation policy do they have?
So very sorry to hear this has happened to you! How very frustrating.
It sounds like you have made the decision to cancel the trip vs seek other flight arrangements.
Many good credit cards will have some sort of coverage for this. If you haven’t already read through what is available on your credit card, I would start there,
I do think your anger at the RV company is misplaced. If you cancel a reservation it is not unreasonable for them to keep the deposit. What you may want to consider, after catching your breath, is asking them if they might consider refunding your deposit if they are able to the RV those days to someone else due to these unusual circumstances.
I hope things work out ok for you!
Take a breather and ask the RV company if they can potentially credit your deposit for different dates (within some reasonably close time frame), assuming you'll make the trip at a different time and you'll still be interested in renting the RV.
Start looking at the airlines that are offering ”rescue fares”
If you booked by credit card, definitely reach out to your provider to see if they can help you. For others who find themselves stranded, these are useful guides:
