I just got back to this beautiful city and will be staying through morning of 15 March.

Is there a thread for current Budapest visitors, I think, perhaps in a different channel?

There is a local group called WineLovers. They do seminars and instructional events and 5 times a year they bring over 100 local wineries together for an event. Today was one at the Corinthia with 119 wineries present. The ticket in was about $40, the sampling was free. Dress, mostly Smart Casual to Business Casual. The number of tourists? There must have been another besides me but I didn't hear any English other than my own and the locals talking to me. Most wineries in Hungary too small for export but they turn out good wines. The next. WINElovers event is a rented cruise boat with 50 or more wineries in July.

Summer is a great time to be here and the dates are starting to come together. Summer is managable here. Spend the afternoons in museums or duck down to the river for a cool breeze. The humidity is relatively low which makes things a bit more comfortable.

20 August is St Stephen’s Day which is the largest, most celebrated holiday in Hungary. The celebration on the river is one of the most magnificent events that I have experienced in my life.

30 August – 10 September is the Jewish Cultural Festival, It is one of the best events of the year in Budapest. Well, for me at least because it celebrates Jewish revival in Central Europe. Someone asked if it would be safe. Yes, there has been no violence against the Jewish population in my 25+ year memory and there had been no vandalism or destruction of a synagogues in Budapest since WWII. https://www.zsidokulturalisfesztival.hu/** It might also be a good week to be sure you have your hotel booked. Budapest gets up to 7 non-stop flights a day from Israel (5 different airlines) combine that with the diaspora from the rest of the world, it tends to be a somewhat busy time of the year.

Adding an update: Mr. E & I were able to meet during an afternoon of my RS Prague/Budapest tour. We met up after the Opera House tour which was convenient to his apartment, also.

The restaurant where we had some afternoon appetizers, etc. was lovely with Ukrainian food & very sweet staff personalities.

Thanks again, Mr. E, for giving me a glimpse of your life living in beautiful Budapest! Your recommendations for restaurants & activities were very much appreciated, also.

Thank you for all your info and enthusiasm for Budapest. I have visited 3 times and always discovered new ways to enjoy the city. Amazing how it has changed yet remains the same in the last 30 years. You may make Budapest as popular as RS made Cinque Terre and Hallstatt.

Jojo biker, gwad I hope not. That was reckless.

As you are aware only a small fraction of Budapest is shinny tourist town, most of the city looks as it did when Stalin was in power.

What has been happening is that once a an area begins to become tight with tourists and prices go up that the improvement and reach of tourism has gone up the next street or further down the current street and the density of the tourism dissipates. There are areas of exception but in general terms that’s what is happening. The side effect is restoration and renovation that was 50 years overdue and streets that are both tourist and local in their use and vibe.

The housing density is high enough that short-term rentals get absorbed into the matrix without much impact in most, but not all, parts of town and so the city remains culturally “Hungarian” for the most part.

Mr E, gwad I hope not too! I figured that statement would get a rise out of you. We first visited Budapest when it had a definite communist feeling. I miss some of the rough edges in my visits in the last 6 years…the city has retained its charm. Ciao for now.

There are a few places where the tourists have won. Vaci utca, Dob utca, lower Kiraly utca and in front of the Basilica. But then where you would have expected like Andrassy ut not at all.

I came in 2001 so you have more history than me, but I miss the wild west a bit too. I once wandered into a prison in Buda by mistake. Ended up with a guard walking me around and showing me the place. Try that now... its the prison Endre Marton and his wife were held in before '56. Political prison. Facinating.
