Updated - Hungary RS Forum Members Meetup Thread

Okay, consider this “That Post”.

For those that want to meet up on the road.

If you are coming to Hungary, or considering coming to Hungary, and while are in Hungary you want to let your presence be known you can use this thread to provide dates and any other information you think might be helpful. Then you guys can discuss it here or in PM’s.

I will try and bump it to the top from time to time and edit or add something to slow down the date it gets locked from lack of participation.

I have tried this before without a whole lot of success, but maybe if those that enjoy this sort of thing will add something below it will encourage.

This is what prompted this thread: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/budapest-mini-trip-report-the-opera-the-scenery-the-food-the-catastrophe#bottom

pbscd, I used to try and keep a thread of who is visiting and when, so
that RS types could meet. But the enthusiasm wasn't there. … Every
country should have a thread to facilitate this sort of thing. When
strangers meet and talk the world gets closer together.

Posted by Laurie Beth

Mr E, I couldn't agree with you more.

“Every country should have a thread to facilitate this sort of thing.
When strangers meet and talk the world gets closer together.” That is
a wonderful idea. And your last sentence says it all. That's so true.

This is a great idea, especially for solo travelers. Hope it gets some momentum. Maybe it could be suggested to the webmaster as a new category.

This is a great idea. I don’t know when I may be able to return to Budapest, but when I do I’m always up for meeting people.

I love the idea! I wish it would have been up when I was there, and then maybe Jennie and I could have met at the opera! Thanks, Mr. E!

Okay, well, I just spent nearly 3 hours in a restaurant with Mike and Wendy. It really is not possible to have a more enjoyable evening. Thank you both. Enjoy your stay and let me know if you need anything.

All the Best J.D.

We had the most enjoyable evening with terrific food (listen to Mr. E, folks, when it comes to his recommendation for Cork) and great conversations. Mike and I greatly appreciate your assistance with putting together our first visit to Budapest. The beauty in this city is amazing! Thank you, James!

I will take your statement of this being the "first" visit to be an indication that there will be a second. Looking forward to it.

Even with spending 8 days in Budapest, it feels like we barely scratched the surface of all the things to see and do. We had the best time and could definitely see a return trip (and another meet-up dinner!)
Take care and Merry Christmas, James!

My husband and I will be in Budapest for the first time January 17-21. Yes, it’s a short whirlwind visit. But sometimes that’s what is available. I’m frantically reading for hints / how to / don’t miss tips on the RS forum and trip reports.

Not sure if this is the place, but first big question is “how to effectively use public transportation?” which is our mode of movement when in Europe.

Posted by
26767 posts

17 to 21 will give you time to see a lot.

Public transportation is pretty easy and runs past all of the good stuff (mostly).

If you are over 65 its free. Just show any old picture ID if asked.
Under 65 you will need a travel card (a lot less expensive than individual tickets) This will be the best deal for you. https://bkk.hu/en/tickets-and-passes/prices/15-day-budapest-pass/ Yes, its 15 days but its cheaper than a 24 hour plus a 72 hour ticket. About $18.

I will send you a PM with a link with more information on the public transportation.

Tammy a few things going on:
4 -7: Gourmet Festival https://gourmetfesztival.hu/hu/
4 - 7: Rosalia Rose Wine Festival at City Park, https://rosalia.hu/hu
6: Steam Engine trip to the Danube Bend https://www.mavrailtours.hu/hu/travels/2026
13: Behind the scenes tour: Ferencváros Railway Station https://www.mavrailtours.hu/hu/travels/2026

I go to the Rose wine festival and the Gourmet Festival every year. Both fun. Both in really interesting locations. One by the castle in city park and the other up in a part of Buda tourists rarely go to. Beautiful park.

Posted by

Tammy, a pleasure. The wine event attracts a few tourists. Its more than wine, lots of food and the location near the castle in the park is pretty sweet. You are going to be here long enough to get out of the usual tourist trails so do the Gorumet Festival. If you do it Saturday morning there is an interesting real world market very near. Nothing tourist about it, but i find it facinating. Its pretty far out, but just one tram through Pest, across the Danube and then through Buda. A geat day.

Actually, you are here long enough to take the Danube Bend steam train. I can almost promise you that you will be the only tourists on the train and that nothing will be repeated in English. I just did one of these, its a blast. The stop at VAC is sort of relevant to tourists. The other stops are more Hungarian family weekend getaway places. So a little research is in order. Try it, you might find me on it (cheap seats).

Oh,if it doesnt show up on the web page, switch to the Hungarian language page and use your browser to translate. What does that tell you LOL.

Sziastok :) I will be here till the morning of 15 March. No major itinerary items, perhaps a day trip to Szeged or Szentendre (though that one might be better in warmer weather). Also considering a 2 day trip to western Ukraine (Liviv) which is challenging in terms of logistics and time.

Szentendre would be a nice trip right now. Our afternoons have been between 60 and 65F these past few days. Easy trip up on the commutter train. Doesnt appear that the boat begins running until 14 March. But the train is only 45 minutes. If you are 65+ its free. If you are younger then you will need an extension ticket for your metro pass. That will cost about $1.25 each way. You can get it at the ticket window at the Batthyány tér Metro 2 / H5 Station.

Lviv is beautiful and well worth a trip but wait till warmer weather. They have electrictiy problems right now and there isnt much heat. Its an all day train ride from Budapest in each direction so at the very least its a 3 day trip and I would want to have 4 or 5 days.

Feel free to contact me if you need any help. I will send you a PM.

I plan to be in Budapest mid-June for a long weekend. Hope to see the Fine Art Museum, The History Museum, and the Flipper Museum. Will probably do a evening boat ride. Trying to decide on an evening at a jazz club or the opera. Making notes on places to eat from prior threads.

We are hoping to hit many of the suggestions from this forum. Thank you, esp. Mr. E.
Question—is Budapest 100 okay for English speaking folks?

Posted by
26767 posts

Carla, they make learning English mandatory in the schools. In Budapest you will have trouble finding someone who doesnt understand your English. The most convenient part is their English is close to American English.

May 4 through 11? Thats a good stay. Promise you wont get bored. You have time for a sidetrip or two if you are interested or you can easily spend it all in town.

We have changed our plans for this Fall and it looks like we will be in Budapest November 1-9. It appears we will be too early for Christmas Markets, but I doubt we will run out of things to do. We’re looking forward to our time there.

Andrea, the good news is the theaters will be in full swing. You can buy for the Opera House now and they will see out. There are some remarkably good seats still available. If you were to decide on a Friday or a Saturday evening box, and there are only two of you, I could be convinced to buy half the box with you. I like Friday and Saturday because more locals in attendance.

The opperett is only selling tickets thorugh June, but keep an eye out for when the pick up the rest of the year. I am guessing in the next 30 - 45 days. But just a wild guess.

The Vígszínház isnt selling for that late yet, but when they do go on sale there is a filter for productions with English subtitles. Lovely place to see a play.

Then there is the .... okay this is getting long. I will send you something.

The other good news is that its still early enough where it has a possiblilty of being a bit warmer.

It might even be an okay time to visit a winery or two. Some have accommodations, some are just great day trips. I know a guide if that sort of thing interests you.

Safe travels.

TTM, I think a party is in order. I wish we were overlapping with you and my brother, but it would have required too much backtracking. I’m hoping we can arrange a meet up with Mr. E and others that may be around.

Mr. E, thank you for your very nice comment about my brother. If he’s a prince, does that make me a princess? 👸😆

Mr E, my brother will be interested in seeing you and potentially TTM, since she and I are friends. Similar to last year at Kadarka, when he met you and Mona & Dave who are longtime friends of mine. Did I tell you that Tim, who was also at that meetup, met up with us in Paris? Anyway, he’s not on the forum so he doesn’t have a connection.

I just let my brother, Dave, know. He said as long as his flights don’t get cancelled for lack of jet fuel (or I suppose any other reason) he will be there. He is also fine with either location. Mr E, you know how to contact him let him know what you decide.

Here’s my itinerary with the tour group:
May 21: some free time in the afternoon. Evening is a boat cruise on the Danube.
May 22: some free time in the afternoon after the tour group cooking class.. I booked a ticket for the Vigado Jazz concert Mr. E recommended for this evening.

You really cant do wrong with any of them. What the list omitted was anything not "Hungarian" and that's a crime.

Ive been told by my Persian friends that a Persian restaurant here is the best outside of Tehran. I love it and i do know a littke about zPersian food.

What chance do you have for Georgian food in your home town (no, I dont mean fried chicken and waffles ... the other Georgia). Ukranian? Morrocan? Okay, kosher Morrocan? Excellent Spanish but miserable nasty TexMex (yuck here). And we have our share of German window meat (naaa). Balkan? Lebanese? Ohhh, Asian! Pick a region. Korea to Thailand. We have the largest Asian population in Central Europe and they all own a restaurant. Dont forget the sushi. A few are just crazy good. Want to see the market in China Town?
I can get you a guide. Dang, forgot Indian (Navajo i think). [Andrew is banging his head on the keyboard]

We just decided to take a day from our Austria trip and head over to Budapest for a night. I know, too short of time, but I have a feeling we will be back.

Anyway, we will be there the night of November 20th. Mr E, do you have any suggestions for our quick trip? We will be taking the train from Vienna and then the return trip will be a stop in Bratislava before arriving in Vienna. I have scoured your hotel lists and have it narrowed down to a handful. I would love your input if you don't mind? Right now the short list is Mirage Medic, Mamaison Anrassy, Hotel Oktogon, Hotel Moments and the Matlid Palace. I know, a wide variety! We really like places with some character, not too corporate feeling an not too generic. The deal breaker is a bathroom without a wall/door. I saw so many of those clear glass ones right in the room when I was looking this morning! As my husband commented "honey I love you, but", lol. Yes, we want a bathroom with privacy:) Thanks for any help you can offer:)

We just decided to take a day from our Austria trip and head over to
Budapest for a night. I know, too short of time, but I have a feeling
we will be back.

No, not too short. I’ve done some quick trips in the past just to see if it was a place I wanted to invest a lot of time in on a future trip. November 20 the Christmas Markets will be open. So you chose well for that.

I am not a huge fan of Bratislava especially when it is taking time from Vienna or Budapest, but many love it. The old town is small, compact, well renovated, expensive and exists for the sole purpose of entertaining tourists. I will get beat up for what I just said, its only my perspective. Everyone is different. The other issue is that to begin to do Bratislava justice, if you did like it, you need 4 hours for the old town alone, and then you miss a lot that is outside of the old town. By the time you do the train ride and do the walk of Bratislava and then the next train, you will have to leave Budapest very early. Better to leave Budapest late if you have only one night. An option is decide when you get to Budapest and buy your ticket at the station; Vienna or Bratislava (different departure stations though).

Interesting hotel list. I think you want old world style. Do remember that list you are working off was a list of well-located hotels. Choosing is a personal preference thing.

  • Mirage Medic: Would not be on my list.
  • Mamaison Anrassy: well, I said I thought you were looking for old world style, this is mid-century modern. I like mid-century modern so no complaint there. I think others on your list would suit me better.
  • Hotel Oktogon: Remember I have stayed in very few hotels in Budapest so I suggest what hotels are in good locations for other to determine if they fit their needs. This one is in an excellent location and I have been inside of it and its beautiful.
  • Hotel Moments: This has become the standard by which a lot of the best located 4 star hotels are judged. It knows it too and the prices reflect it. It is the best located of all, but that means 3 minutes closer to the sights and not much more. It’s a beautiful old world building but in my mind as a guest you don’t really get to enjoy it as much as you should as the old world style is in the lobby and who sits there? But I could be wrong.
  • Matlid Palace: An absolutely stunning old world building … close to nothing. For a one night stay, I would think that you would want more efficiency.

From your list my first choice without care of cost would be the Hotel Moments. With caring about cost, the Hotel Oktogon. I looked at photos in both and didn’t notice any glass bathroom, but no promises. Call or write and ask.

Here is a post on the Christmas markets in Budapest and note the link to Emily’s post on the markets in Vienna: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/budapest-christmas-markets-d26f8ab1-2048-4160-bfb3-bf13b096683e

AND, we still need to help plan the days and a dinner you wont forget with wine and gypsy music.

Posted by
4017 posts

Mr E--Thank you so much, that was very helpful! I narrowed it down to the Oktogon and the Moments, but ultimately decided on the Hotel Moments as they emailed right back about the bathroom situation. Real walls with a partial glass door. Works for us:) I talked to my husband about Bratislava too and we like your reasoning and will skip that this trip and have a bit more time in Budapest. We have an apartment in Vienna, so can just leave everything there except a quick change of clothes. I would love any information on transportation between Vienna and Budapest, and anything else you recommend. We would love to meet up with you if it works! I will message you for more details, but truly appreciate your help here.

I love to meet RS folks, but cant guarantee November. Hard to know about next week sometimes.

Take the earliest train that works with your schedule. Book it through the MAV site on your laptop not on their App (probalby wont work from the US on the App). That will save you a chunk of change. Dont worry about it until the first of November. Same for the train back. Its only about 2.5 hours so the later the better to get the most out of the stay. Typical dinner over here is 7 or later so if you get a 4:30 train to Vienna you have dinner and drinks in Vienna and go to bed. You could do it here if you didnt mind getting home to Vienna at midnight.

Hotel Moments. You will arrive at Keleti pályaudvar. Literally meas Eastern Railway Station. Its a beautiful 19th century classical station. If you are under 65 download BudapestGo and buy a 24 hour TravelCard not one of the fancy cards will all the extras, just the basic transportation card called a TravelCard for 2750 Hungarian Forints (about $9). If you are over 65 do nothing. Its free. Then when you get off the train walk to the front of the station, down the stairs and follow the signs to the M2 Metro. All public transportation directions are identified by the end stops, so you want Déli pályaudvar. Go one stop to Blaha Lujza tér and get off and go up to the street. Welcome to Budapest.

See the pretty yellow tram? Get on in the direction of Szell Kalman ter. Sit on the right and look out the window. First thing of note is the famous NY Cafe (google it). Stay on until the 3rd stop and get off. Its called Oktogon. If you had chose the Oktogon Hotel it is about 100 feet from here. Your hotel is a bit further. There is a fast way and a scenic way. The scenic is walk. Its 10 minutes at most and you will go down the most beautiful avenue in Central Europe. Your hotel is on the right.

Dont try and recreate this with google maps. It wont take you this way. It will put you on a bus or stick you underground in the metro. You havent got time to hide underground. Check-in and leave the luggage.

Dinner 19:00: My favorite "I have one night in town and want to feel Hungarian" restaurant: https://maps.app.goo.gl/wq4DzeWb38RWpQim9

Next day lunch or dinner: https://maps.app.goo.gl/sKkYn1n3tJNWyytY7 or https://maps.app.goo.gl/CSzKedFTN8YGJr7r5 Totally different and I love them both.

Now you have to ask more questions.

Posted by
4017 posts

Mr E--Wow, thank you so much for all of that! I will definitely ask more questions once I have a chance to figure out what those will be;) That restaurant looks great, but I see in the photos men wearing suits. Is that the norm there or would smart casual be ok?

Posted by
26767 posts

Smart casual is fine. Neither restaurant is particularly fancy, its just tge local culture. Smart of you to notice. More formal than Vienna but fairly typical for Eastern Europe.
