Other Hungarian towns outside of Budapest to spend time in?

Eger makes a good day trip from Budapest since there's a direct train taking 2h. Seniors over the age of 65 ride for free according to: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Budapest.htm#Budapest-Hungary.

I really enjoyed Pecs several years ago. They have beautiful architecture, including the city walls, a historic synagogue, and a mosque turned into a church. The early Christian archeological sites were particularly interesting.

Where are you coming from and going to, as you look for places to pass through? It’s worth noting that most trains and busses go from and return to Budapest. Much of Hungary beyond Budapest is off the beaten track. You could look at Eger, Pecs, or Gyor (although I wouldn’t want to try any of those as a day trip). Szentendre makes a nice day out if weather cooperates. Kecskemét Is also really cute.

Here is what makes knowing more about your trip more helpful. Most every train between most any two cities in Hungary goes through Budapest. Yes, you can do buses and avoid returning to Budapest, but some are not a great fan of buses.

But there are some interesting stops on the way out of Hungary:
- Gyor, Pannonhalma Archabbey on the way to Austria
- Pecs on the way to Slovenia
- Miskolc, Eger (a bit of a side trip), Lillafüred (also a side trip) on the way to Slovakia
- Kosice
- Uzhhorod
- Bratislava
- Vienna
