First time visitors to Hungary

My husband and I are heading to Hungary in September for the first time and I’d love a little feedback on our plans.

We arrive in Budapest the afternoon of Sept 2 and will have about 3 days on our own before our daughter meets us. Then the three of us will spend another 3 days in Budapest before continuing on to Vienna.

For Budapest, we’re thinking of the following itinerary:

Day 1
Castle Hill
Mathias Church
Várkert Bazár
Hospital in the Rock and Nuclear Bunker Museum

Day 2
Hungarian Parliament
Great Synagogue
Lunch in the Jewish Quarter
Great Market Hall
Walk across Chain Bridge
Danube River cruise

Day 3
Heroes' Square
City Park
Vajdahunyad Castle
Széchenyi Thermal baths

Does that sound like a good plan for a first visit? Anything you’d skip or add?

For our first few days (just the two of us), we’d love to do something a bit special for our anniversary. We really enjoy wine and were thinking about heading to Eger and checking out Szépasszony-völgy.

Would Eger be a good choice for a couple of days? Better as an overnight or just a day trip? Or is there somewhere else you’d recommend instead (Tokaj, Lake Balaton, etc.)? Open to any ideas—just looking for something memorable and not too complicated before we meet up with our daughter.

Thanks so much!

Amy, what a wonderful trip and you are giving it enough time. In general I will say that your days have a lot of free time at the end. That’s not an issue, as there is a lot to see, do, relax and enjoy.

Wednesday, 2 Sept: Castle Hill/Mathias Church/Várkert Bazár/Hospital in the Rock and Nuclear Bunker Museum: A good use of half a day, and arrival day. But if you care arriving from the US you might want to do a lower key day, but that depends on where you are staying.

Thursday, 3 Sept: Hungarian Parliament (get your tickets now if not already)/Great Synagogue/Lunch in the Jewish Quarter/Great Market Hall/Walk across Chain Bridge/Danube River cruise: Are you staying in Buda? Is that why you list walking across the bridge? If you are staying in Pest, then you did that the day prior. Otherwise, all your stops line up nice along the 2 Tram and the 47/49 Tram. With a starting location (hotel) someone could comment on the route and order and some other stops along the way; for instance, there are some great antique print and book shops if you are moving in one direction and a labyrinth of connecting basements full of antiques if you are going the other direction.

For your lunch in the Jewish quarter if you want to touch the culture in a unique way, look for a Kosher restaurant. Here are a few to look at:

Friday, 4 Sept: Heroes' Square/City Park/Vajdahunyad Castle/Széchenyi Thermal baths
For City Park there is the House of Music and the Ethnographic Museum both to tour or just for the architecture. The outdoor train museum isn’t far. There are some good restaurants close by. Good meaning either great food or interesting experiences. You will be done by mid afternoon even if you take a long soak at the baths, so again, a starting/ending point (hotel) help with suggestions.
This is a Friday, a great night for the theater. Opera, Oprett, Musical …. Several great venues in town. But for the Opera, buy now.

For our first few days (just the two of us), we’d love to do something
a bit special for our anniversary. We really enjoy wine and were

Eger is always a good idea and for Szépasszony-völgy hire a guide for the day. See if The Senator Haz still has rooms available. If not look on google maps of the location and find something that meets your criteria that is close to The Senator Haz. Balaton, not unless romantic to you is a modern resort hotel. Tokaj is more of a trip out of Eger same guide, same day.

Another suggestion is there are some wine tour companies that do overnights at wineries out of Budapest. Some ae very close and some a bit further. I also know a young lady that does these bespoke if she is available. I will send you contact information. I love these sorts fo things and the wine.

Wait, heck, you are here in September! Change your plans and go to Vienna first. LOL

But in general, Budapest is very plesant in September, the outside cafes are open and there is life without it being too crowded.

Another suggestion for your romantic side trip might be Lillafüred for a night or two.

Hi Amy - I am also going to be a first time visitor in September, but I arrive a week later. When I realized the Wine Festival would coincide with my visit, I included that on my itinerary.

But I understand it may be impractical so switch your plan around. But during my research, I also found out that September 6 is the Budapest (half?) marathon, which may impact access to some areas and lodging availability. Just something to keep in mind.

Joy had a good concern so I did a little research. In July Budapest sees 2.4 million tourists (the busiest month of the year.) In September, including the Wizzair Half Marathon participants and spectators Budapest sees 900.000 tourists. I think things will be fine.

But always best to book early.

Mr. E is most certainly the expert here! But just to add a few more highlights from our trip in July of last year: Opera house tour, Terror Haza visit, short stop at the Jewish Ghetto Wall (nice complement to the Dohany Street Synagogue), Gellert Baths (we also visited Szechenyi), Shoes on the Danube memorial, and a truly amazing dinner at Parisi Passage restaurant. Have a wonderful trip!

Europefan, i am no expert and there is no being an expert in finding what you enjoy or in shared experiences. I'm really only good for technical issues.

Hi Amy, I'm going to copy GeoffB and also post a link to my trip report. I was there for five nights in early October of 2025 and absolutely loved the city. You will have a wonderful trip! There's so many things to see and do, and just keep telling yourself that you can always come back, because there is no way you can see everything. I missed a lot, but I was happy to see the things I did. Food was wonderful. I listed a few of the places that I ate at in my trip report, but honestly, there are so many more really good restaurants there.

I also enjoyed just wandering throughout the city without any plans and taking in the the incredible vibe of Budapest, which was a lot of fun. You don't have to have an event for every segment of the day. Sometimes it's nice to just stroll along amidst the beautiful architecture, the river, and all the interesting cafes and restaurants.

And I see that you have it in your list of places to visit, but whatever you do, don't miss Matthias Church. It's probably one of the most beautiful churches I've ever been in.
