Budapest in the Summer

Its summer and the forum is lighting up with temperature concerns.

Its 2:30pm and my phone says it's 90F in Budapest. A quick Google says the humidity is 25% and the breeze is 8mph. I am sitting outside in the shade at Palack Wine Bar & Bistro, which is just above the Danube embankment on the Buda side. It would be hard to expect a more comfortable situation any time of the year.

I know we have a few RS types coming to Budapest, so ....

  • Yes, it can and does hit 100F a few times a year but thats not a typical day.
  • The humidity tends to be below 30% and it's true that this makes a difference. 90F here can feel like 80F in Houston.
  • There is almost always a breeze in Budapest, thanks to the Danube I presume and that further reduces the discomfort of the heat.
  • Shorts and sun dresses are fine
  • The hottest part of the day is 4 pm to 6 pm so that is museum time and if it's a particularly warm day take the metro instead of a tram or walking.
  • Walk in the shade. The narrow streets and tall buildings almost always make this possible.
  • Head for the river where it always feels a bit cooler and the breeze is unobstructed.
  • Head for the Buda hills where the temps are quite a bit lower.
  • Drink white wine instead of red

What did i forget?

Mr. E: thanks for these reminders. I was in Budapest more than 10 years ago and really enjoyed my visit. There is so much to do and see and the city itself is fascinating. With Europe so hot right now, maybe your post will encourage more folks to see BudaPest.

The OP was referring to participants of the RS forum who stated that they were coming. Nothing more complicated than that.

I’m one who is going to Budapest this summer and I think it is just a good heads up for me and all who travel to European cities during the summer months.

Edit: Budapest was where I had my first genuinely icy and fruit filled spritz type of drink several years ago. I really appreciated it then and I’m hoping to find it on menus this summer for an afternoon, get off of your feet type of drink.

But what will I drink in early October? Can I have both? ;-)

Mr E,

We will be heading to Budapest after Munchen, Salzburg, & Wien.
Can you suggest a few places for typical Hungarian cuisine?
I found a list of places but you seem to be in the know!
It is 30'C here in Vilnius, so warm days in Europe for sure!

Mr. E,

I saw your responses in the Budapest Food Forum. Thank you.

Mr. E,
Thank you.
We are staying at Butterfly Home, Budapest, Fővám tér 2-3, 1056
I saw your list on the other forum. I just looked at Paprika and my mouth is watering!
Where are you from in Texas?

That's Texas Travel Moms list. Pretty good. You are pretty much in the center of the river boat tourist zone. so many of the places are a little less than authentic. But one excellent place that comes to mind is the Bálant (whale). It has a few restaurants with terraces that look over the River. Great in nice weather https://maps.app.goo.gl/sKrH5ozSJ6SBuUxK9.

Just across the river, a few that I like are

Its been a few years since I was last there, but it was good, and the reputation stays strong. I would always do a reservation if you can. Otherwise, it could be a long trip for a disappointment.

Welcome to your homeland. I just wandered in here a little over 20 years ago, like it and kept returning till retirement … then just stayed. We were in SATX at the same time. I packed up my life and left in early 2022. Yes, an Aggie.

de nada.

  • Sun (6 July) Mostly sunny currently (2pm) 91F and 22% Humidity and a steady breeze at 3.5m/second (8mph) which is more common than not thanks to the Danube (I presume). Right at the outter edge of the comfort zone. Stay out of direct sunlight and its fairly comfortable.
