Still looking for a safe one night stay in Munich. I'm looking at Hotel Europa about 1 mile from station. We arrive at 9:30 Pm
Would it be possible to get a cab? We don't want to walk in the dark to the hotel.
Being a mile away from the station doesn't sound like it is close by. Yes, you can get a taxi as they are always around, but they won't be happy about taking you just one mile. Munich is a safe city no matter where you go and this includes the train station area, and all of the hotels are safe too. What time of year are you going there because it won't be long until it is still light outside at 21:30.
Checking Trip Advisor, Hotel Europa has some rather mixed reviews, mainly about noise, being on a main road, and staff. Why have you chosen this hotel? Is it recommended in the RS guidebook? Are there others that are nearer the station? I looked on www.hrs.com and found dozens of near-by hotels with excellent ratings. Once you find a place you like, check the website of the hotel to see if the price is cheaper and also read the reviews on Trip Advisor. Use the filters to get what you want, wi-fi, free breakfast, proximity to the station, late check-in.
There are taxis in Munich and you can find them around the Hauptbahnhof. However, I wouldn't really worry about your safety walking a mile in Munich at night. You can also get to near Hotel Europa using streetcars. Take the number 20 tram from in front of the Hauptbahnhof 5 minutes to the Sandstrasse stop. It's 60 yards walking on Dachauer Str from there.
Another hotel, closer, is Hotel Royal. Its only a 300 yd walk from the Hauptbahnhof. Some say the neighborhood is a little seedy, but not unsafe. It's been well recommended here. Contact them directly; don't use a booking website.
Hotel Amba is across the street from the Hauptbahnhof and the price includes breakfast. The desk people are efficient and polite, and helped me immensely after I arrived with a broken leg, and the following year when I came back healthy. It's also next door to a popular inexpensive pizza place.
When my parents and I arrive about 20:30 on the train from Venice to Munich, we felt no discomfort to walk to a nearby hotel with our luggage, and later to walk out again to dinner.
Have you been following this thread -- https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/germany/hotels-close-to-munich-hbf? It might help you.
Many years ago (2008) I stayed at Hotel Monaco for one night while traveling. It was very close to the train station and was a great budget hotel. Being so close to the station, it was not in the best part of town, but the hotel was quite safe and I did not feel unsafe walking to it in the dark after dinner. It may be a good option for you (https://www.munich-accommodation.com/route-to-munich-hotel.php), but please check for recent reviews since my experience is a bit out of date.
Good luck!
We have booked a hotel! Thank you everyone for your help. You have been most kind. Here's hoping to a safe nighttime walk in Munich.
There's a great hotel right across the street from the train station. We stayed with our two adult sons (3 rooms) for 3 nights. Hotel Flemings on Bayerstrasse #47
