Restaurant recommendations - Nuremberg, Bamberg, Munich, Salzburg

Hello! I am making final plans for our trip - leaving next week!! I am looking for lunch/dinner/beer hall recommendations. We are a family of 4 - myself, husband and two sons, ages 18 and 20. We are excited to experience local culture, food, beer, etc.

Please send me any and all of your favorite food and drink spots in these towns. We will be in Nuremberg for 3 nights, Bamberg as a day trip, Salzburg and Munich for 3 nights each.

Also, if there are favorites of any type, including non-food in these areas, let me know. I have a good list and itinerary, but always love to hear more! This site has been an enormous help and huge wealth of information throughout the planning process!!

Thanks!

In Salzburg, we have enjoyed Zwettler's and Johanskeller for dinners.

In Munich there is Hofbrauhaus, but I do not recommend it for food at all. Terrible, IMO. Go there for drinks and the atmosphere, but that's it. We really liked Der Pschorr which was across from Viktualienmarkt. We had a great lunch at the Augustiner am Platzl which is on a corner basically across from the Hofbrauhaus. The Hotel Lux is just down the street and around the corner and their bar is really good plus has a really cool atmosphere! We stayed there for several nights and loved it.

suzanne--On our first trip to both of these locations, it was my husband and I and our young adult kids, so just a tad older than yours. Then this past December when I went, it was with our daughter and our sons gf, so again with a younger set. The places we ate were perfect for all of us.

I stayed in Nürnberg last year for 4 nights and ate at one restaurant called Literaturhaus for at least 4, maybe 5 meals. It is on Luitpoldstraße near the Altstadt and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many of the people I saw in there were Germans - in fact, on several occasions there were groups of locals there for various events - one was a book club meeting and another one was a birthday party for a woman who was turning 90. The book club group was sitting near me and told me that they meet there regularly (we spoke in German, although the servers speak English).

The food was very good - lots of German entrees - and a large and varied menu. I was there once for breakfast, once for lunch and at least twice for dinner. I really enjoyed eating here. https://www.restaurant-im-literaturhaus.de/

I've just been to Bamberg and was particularly impressed with Eckert on Oberemuhlbruecke. Literally on the river bank with nice views, and also good local-style food one step up from the beerhall. Particularly liked their roast loin of boar.

In Bamberg "Die Küche" was one of the best meals we've had in years. (It's not traditional Franconian cuisine).

Also in Bamberg, the Rauchbier at Brauerei Spezial is my favorite beer of all time!

In Munich last summer I very much enjoyed Wirtshaus Rechthaler Hof near the Haupt Bahnhof. That was my favorite radler of the many radlers that I drank on that trip! Good food, too.

There are so many good places to eat in Nürnberg it's hard to recommend one over another. So I'll suggest things to eat, provide some links to possible restaurants that serve them and you can compare.

  1. Nürnberger bratwurst. It's the local specialty and you all need to have some. Here's one link, but TripAdvisor and our friend Google will produce more: https://www.tasteatlas.com/bratwurst/wheretoeat Click on In Nuremberg.

  2. Schäufele. I lived near the Aldstadt in Nürnberg from 1982-85. I became absolutely addicted to schweineschäufele mit knödel and saurkraut or salad or both. I usually ate it at a small gästehaus in Erlangen where I mostly worked. The link describes this Franconian delight and has some restaurants where it is served in Nürnberg: https://tourismus.nuernberg.de/geniessen/spezialitaeten/fraenkische-spezialitaeten/ofenfrisches-schaeufele/

  3. All the schnitzels but especially Zigeunerschnitzel. Here's a link about all the types: https://alltastesgerman.com/top-8-german-schnitzel-variations/
This Yelp list features schnitzel restaurants, but many places serve it: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Schnitzel&find_loc=Nuremberg%2C+Bayern

  4. Goulash soup was also an addiction. I don’t know if what I had in Nürnberg was special, but here are some restaurants that serve it there: https://restaurantguru.com/goulash-soup-Nuremberg-m8832

  5. Finally, you may see wild game on many restaurant menues. I can recommend the venison from the roe deer.

Note that some of the lebkuchen shops may have switched to gelato by the time you get there, but I'm sure there will still be some shops that sell it and plenty of places for an afternoon kaffee und kuchen. Be sure to participate in this German tradition as many days as you can: https://www.thelocal.de/20200902/kaffee-und-kuchen-a-very-german-tradition

The Germans who worked with us in the Nürnberg Military Community did this every afternoon in the workplace and we very quickly and easily adopted the practice. ☕️ 🍰
