We are cruising and docking in Hamburg. Ship is in port 7am-10pm. Is it possible to see Berlin on our own? If so, what is the best way? Not crazy about ship’s offerings (feel like everything is a drive by). Thanks in advance for suggestions!
You can use trains - tavel time appr. 2 hrs one way - but cruise terminal are not close to Hamburg main station.
Book and use Deutsche Bahn: https://int.bahn.de/en
Renting a car is also an option but neither Hamburg nor Berlin traffic is easy. Furthermore the Autobahn A24 is known for fastly paced traffic. If you are not familiar with driving high-speeds (depending on weekday and time) it can be stressy. Furthermore you need driving permission (e. g. IDP) - not only driving license of your country (source).
Bus takes too long.

There is plenty to see and do in Hamburg. While Berlin is 100% worth a visit, you will feel rushed and stressed, won't see much, and will end up feeling frustrated that you missed so much of it. I would say if there is no organised excursion, stick to Hamburg. We are happy to advise a more local experience that suits your needs and interests a bit better.
