Family Tour in Berlin

Hello everyone!

My family and I will be visiting Berlin this summer, and now that our hotel and travel plans are sorted, I’m starting to organize some memorable experiences in the city. We’re hoping to find a knowledgeable private tour guide for around half a day who can really bring Berlin’s history and culture to life.

We’re especially interested in WWII history, the Cold War, and stories connected to Berlin’s past, but we’d also love someone who can make the tour interesting and interactive for our children (ages 12 and 15). A guide who is friendly, engaging, and good with families would be ideal.

If anyone has had a great experience with a private Berlin guide or tour company, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks so much in advance!

I can help!
I connected with Robert Sommer:
http://thetrueberliner.com/
Because he grew up in Berlin his shared personal experiences (i.e. his memories from an East Berlin day care, being a teen at-and on- the wall) would engage your teens. He showed me where he sat to study at the university :) He has an excellent sense of humor.

I walked with him my first day, which helped provide context for the rest of the week on my own.
I have previously suggested Trabi Tours on the Forum:

It's not far from Checkpoint Charlie (that museum is small and also a must-see) and looks kitschy and like a "tourist trap" but your family will love it. I did! The lead driver was knowledgeable and very funny at the same time and driving past the famous landmarks (with people taking your car's photo) was unique. A highlight was the stretch of road still filled with Communist-era apartments and it was a memorable experience.
Have a wonderful trip!

I'm the guy who always writes about Robert Sommer. He's very good. And he was 15 years old when the wall fell... you have 12 and 15 year old? Maybe they can imagine themselves in his stories?

Also... if your kids would be willing to watch a film with subtitles... the 2018 film Balloon, based on the true story of two families (outside Berlin) that came up with the idea to escape from East Germany to West Germany via a hot-air balloon, is quite good. Part of the film is shot in Berlin.

Hi Liam,

We just got back from 4 nights in Berlin. If you have the Rick Steves Berlin book, look at page 32 for his recommendation of Markus Wiehler. We took his East Berlin Wall Special 3 hour tour and it was the highlight of our time in Berlin. In addition to being incredibly knowledgeable, Markus is very lively and engaging. He also has a remarkable personal story to tell as well, as he was a 19 year old East Berlin acrobat with a troupe during the Cold War who defected during a trip to Paris for an acrobatic competition. I don’t post reviews very often but gladly do so for this as our experience was so memorable. Here’s his website if you are interested: http://www.eastsideseeing.com Enjoy your time in Berlin!

Hello Liam,
My husband and I just returned from Berlin last week and had a memorable tour with Matti Geyer who runs Tours of Berlin. https://www.toursofberlin.com/ Matti was a wonderful guide who was very knowledgeable, friendly and fun and made our day in Potsdam visiting the WW2 sites one of the true highlights of our trip. We learned so much that day and it really brought history to life by seeing the places where Stalin, Truman and Churchill met during the 1945 Potsdam conference and The Bridge of Spies where the movie was based on. Our tour also included Sans Souci Palace which had so much history and beauty. We really loved the city of Potsdam too, with its lakes and parks and charming shopping district, and thought we might even revisit there if we ever returned to that area. Matti was able to create a tour geared towards our interests and I’m sure he could make a tour that was family friendly for you. His website lists a number of tours that he has on Cold War and WW2 and he works with many other guides if he is not available to be your guide.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful time in Berlin!
Ann

We spent a week in Berlin in September and saw all the sights and ate amazing diverse food every night but the highlight for me was the panda twins at the Berlin Zoo. We went early before the crowds.
To some, amidst all the history, that may seem silly but I absolutely loved it.
