Berlin Tour Guide

Four of us recently spent a couple of days in Berlin before beginning a tour of Munich, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. We found Jeremy Minsburg, the Berlin Expert online and engaged him for a walking tour of Berlin. Jeremy met us at our hotel, laid out a plan for the day, guided us through the sites, history and stories of east and west Berlin. He was a joy to be with and if you have time in Berlin for a guided tour, contact Jeremy as soon as possible. He is a gem.

Jeremy gets huge amounts of praise on this board. He is a top-notch guide who is great for an overview of Berlin. One cannot go wrong with Jeremy.

I don't want to do anything to detract from your experience, but I always like to give one alternative for a traveler who is perhaps looking for something deeper. If a traveler is looking for someone who experienced Berlin history from birth, I would recommend Robert Sommer. He was the 15-year-old son of a high-ranking East German bureaucrat at the time the Berlin Wall fell and was a part of the punk rocker scene during that time. He can talk about growing up in East Berlin. He can give a firsthand account of his experience of the fall of the Berlin Wall (along with that of his family). He can talk about punk rocker vs neoNazi fights/battles in which he participated. He can talk about squatting in old, rundown, abandoned tenements in East Berlin after reunification. He can talk about university life in Berlin (earned a PhD in history). He can talk about being married to a woman who was at one time in Germany's Parliament. He is a fascinating guy with a truly remarkable history to share. I've done many off-the-beaten-path things with him -- everything from exploring underground bunkers that held nuclear warheads on a former Soviet military base to visiting places pretty much no tourist/traveler visits in Berlin (like the old East German Marzahn high-rise residential. development and its neighbor, the Old Marzahn village that has existed since the Middle Ages).
