Deustchland ticket questions

Sorry, but very basic questions. It's been more than a decade since I was last in Germany.

I think that the Deutschland ticket makes the most sense for my upcoming trip, as I will fly to MUC, spend four nights there, and then putter around Bavaria for a couple of weeks, perhaps dipping into Austria as a daytrip, before eventually making my way to Nurnberg and Dresden (then heading on to Czechia and Poland -- total trip about 6 weeks).

I land in MUC on the first of the month, so I can wring every cent from the D-ticket.

Per Seat61, the simplest way to buy the D-ticket is to use the website tranzer.com and pay the small service charge; they have no difficulties with foreign credit cards and will immediately cancel the renewal so that I don't have to do that by the 10th. Fabulous. I've had a look at their website on my laptop and am a bit confused because it says that it is a WalletPass (great!) and the ticket is immediately transferred to my smartphone...but how does that work if I buy it from their website on my laptop? Do I need to use a web browser on my iPhone to purchase the ticket for the WalletPass transfer to work? (blushing at the naivety of this question).

Second, is using DBNavigator the best way to find eligible trains (RE and RB, yes, and local transport options, but others?) Or is there some other way to make sure that I don't accidentially get on a non-included train?

Thank you for your help!

Last August, My husband and I traveled around Bavaria with D-tickets. We used the MVV app to purchase our tickets. After buying the tickets, we went in 5 minutes later and canceled our subscriptions. It was very easy and no extra fees were charged. I followed Carol's steps outlined in this post. (It's the 4th one down the page.) When you take the trains, you just use the MVV app to access your digital D-ticket.

I downloaded the DBNavigator app and only searched for local trains, so it's a good search tool for D-ticket trains. As a word of warning, be sure to check train schedules the night before heading out. The regional trains going in and out of Nuremberg were canceled due to major construction works on the lines. We ended up having to buy tickets on ICE trains for our Augsburg-Nuremberg and Nuremberg-Munich journeys.

@LaurieC: this is very helpful, thank you. I'm a bit surprised that the Man in Seat 61 doesn't mention the MVV website; this is much simpler than using the tranzer.com website.

And thank you for reminding me to check train schedules for disruptions.

If you book via browser you can switch on "Deutschland-Ticket connections only" in the extended dialogue.

Look a the display while you wait on a platform. Train numbers NOT covered start with ICE, IC or EC. The rest is OK.

The DB Nav App is definitely your first choice when traveling with Deutsche Bahn. And you can buy this also via German local transport providers such as HVV. MVV, RMV, BVG and others.

I have bought D-tickets twice. In December 23 I used the MVV app. In September 24 I used the HVV app. Both were equally easy for the purchase, cancellation and use. The reason I used the HVV app last year is that I wasn’t arriving until the 18th of the month and I was able to prorate the ticket amount to reflect the time I was actually able to use it. I only had to pay from September 18-30. Don’t forget to cancel it after the purchase goes through or it will automatically renew for the following month.

Please note that there have been restrictions on the HVV Switch Ticket for some time: 1. you can only buy it one week before the first day of validity, 2. as with any other carrier, you have to cancel by the 10th of the month at the latest. Both together mean that you have to pay for a minimum duration of 13 or 14 days. Still cheap, but the earlier use as a dirt-cheap day ticket (€1.60 for the whole country) is thus prevented.

I have used D-Ticket multiple times with great success. I have used MVV to purchase and store my tickets and have found that the MVV app works more consistently than the web browsers.

Yes, use DB website or app to verify eligible trains. All S/U-Bahn, trams and busses are included.

You can go all the way to Salzburg on D-Ticket when you dip into Austria.

For longer trips please consider buying an ICE ticket. My rule of thumb with the D-Ticket is three or more local connections isn't worth the time and hastle compared to the additional cost of the direct ICE ticket.

Update: From May 1, 2025, there will no longer be a prorated version of the HVV Switch ticket (with the exception of Hamburg residents): the HVV must adapt to the nationally applicable DT regulations (source: https://www.hvv-deutschlandticket.de/de/faq/#order).

I have used Tranzer twice, it really is easy, just follow the steps, no setting up an account, no going in and canceling, in fact if needed, you can buy a pass for the month after the 10th, without incurring a charge for the following month..

HELP! Per the instructions in the linked post, I have made a MVV account but cannot find the D-ticket to purchase on the app. I've looked under "TICKETS"

What should I be looking for (and where?)

Ok, I found the shopping cart (logo is DB) with the D-Ticket. But for address the drop down doesn’t have USA as a country option. Suggestions for how to proceed? Thanks

Unfortunately not but for sure some other forum members are able to help.

Done! The DB app only takes direct bank draft, but I was able to find the correct sequence of taps to get to the D-ticket page on MVV; it accepted both a US address and a US credit card.

May ticket is purchased, and subscription canceled. Thank you to everyone for your help.
