Best Hotel to visit Neuschwanstien Castle

I have been in love with Neuschwanstien Castle since I was an 8 year old and my parents took me to see it.
This fall I am looking to go back to Germany with my Father in-part to track down relatives and in part to site see and the only place I am insisting upon going is to Newschwanstien Castle.
Being as this is my first return and most likely only return visit I want to enjoy myself. So if money was not a huge opject (I am not wealthy but I am willing to splurge on this) what is the best place to stay. Ideally with a view of the Castle. As I could be very happy just to sit and look at the place for hours.
This Castle, the Eiffel Tower and London’s Tower Bridge are my three ultimate places to visit. The Eiffel Tower and Tower Bridge I did last year. (And will also visit on this trip)
I will be there in mid September. And I will have a car. But I will have my 87 year old father with me. And while he can walk and climb stairs there is a limit. On the plus side he speaks German so he is useful :)

Any suggestions (for a place to stay or anything else related to this) would be a huge help. I have looked forward to returning here for 40 years. So getting this part of the trip “right” is critical to the success of the trip.

Thanks..

I haven't been to Neuschwanstein yet, so can't give a personal recommendation, but am planning on visiting in November or December this year, so I've started researching this. It looks like there are several hotels in Schwangau with rooms that have a view of the castle:

  • Alpenhotel Allgäu (the only one in this list in the Rick Steves guidebook)
  • Alpenstuben Hotel
  • Hotel Müller
  • Villa Ludwig

In all cases you would probably want to inquire directly with the hotel to ensure the room you are interested in has a view of Neuschwanstein rather than Hohenschwangau. I hope you have a great trip!

We visited in October 2012, but stayed about 20 minutes from it in Reutte at Hotel Goldener Hirsch. It was a nice hotel with a somewhat quirky, eccentric owner. When we went to the castle it was very foggy and hard to see, even when standing in front of it. Hope it’s clear when you visit.

We stayed twice in nearby Fuessen at the Hotel zum Hechten. This front is right on the old town pedestrian zone of Fuessen with free parking behind the hotel. 10 minutes from Neuschwanstein.
