Your expectations from local people in visited countries

I am an inhabitant of Szczecin, one of the main cities in Poland, a cultural center, a center of education, science and industry and transport hub (sea and river harbour, international airport, motorway and express ways, railway junction near the Polish-German border) with tourist attractions inside and around the city (e.g. Stargard, Police, Nowe Warpno, Międzyzdroje, Świnoujście, Ueckermünde, Torgelow and Nowe Czarnowo near Gryfino - Crooked Forest). Reading questions and answers in this forum I think what are your expectations from local people. Could you provide some thoughts explaining what types of needs you are willing to show - openness to solving difficulties in language communication, help with orientation in the field, practical comments, selection of dishes or types of cuisine, mental support or others?

This is a very odd question. Travelers from the US (most of the forum) expect many different things. So, you have gotten no answers.

I have the notion that there is a hidden agenda in this posting. Perhaps you might get better responses if you were clearer. Are you looking to start a tourist guide business?

We may ask locals sitting near us in a restaurant for suggestions for our stay in their city.

I have no particular expectations. I am just grateful for the opportunity to visit.

When tourists are in my tourist city I treat them with the same respect as anyone else and when I am the one visiting a tourist destination I hope for the same. Nothing more complicated than that.

My sentiments as well. I'm a guest in someone else's home and I'm grateful for the opportunity to travel. My only hope is to be treated with kindness and patience.

Different travelers look for different things. I prefer smaller cities to larger ones, but I also need for them to have a reason for me to go - museums? nature? restaurants? easy access to good transportation? a festival? some other sort of local experience?

Then I need a way to know those things exist - that means advertising or media of some kind. I can’t go if I don’t know about it.

Those are a few things to consider. And we don’t all value the same things equally.

Hi,

Regarding Szczecin I was only there once . That was in 2003 in the train station waiting for the connecting train to Gdansk. I was coming from Berlin and Szczecin was the second place to change trains, the entire train ride then from Berlin to Gdansk took 9 hours.

The experience I have had with Polish people in the border villages I have been in , east of Küstrin or Frankfurt an der Oder (these were the two places I crossed over into Poland), those in the service industry, ie, restaurant staff or cafes, were almost always tri-lingual, speaking Polish, German and English. My impressions and experiences with local people I encountered...100% positive, communicative, professional, etc. No problems at all communicating with them either in German or English.

I try to not have expectations of local people. I am the foreigner in a strange place so I try to treat others with respect and humility
