I have spent the holidays in madrid and paris before. Could u suggest recommendations for another areas where the holidays might be enjoyable and why.

Rome is terrific. Lots to do as at any time of the year, beautiful lights, nativity scenes in every church, plenty of places open to dine Christmas Eve and Day. We traveled here for Christmas before we moved here, BTW.
Last year we went to a resort in the Dolomites and it was a very special place for Christmas. If you enjoy skiing, it's a bonus, but hiking, snowshoeing, are also available and a unique place to spend the holiday with family. Hotel Albion.

We loved Christmas in Venice. no tourists and ice rinks in the plazas, hot wine vendors.
