WOW Airlines

I found a Boston to Paris flight that flies out on Iceland Air and back home on WOW airlines. The price, which is for June/July travel, is exceptional at $780. Looking at the fine print it seems like I will have to pay $20 per reserved seat (which I will want to do because I'm traveling with 2 children) and $50 per checked bag (last time we had 2 checked bags). When you add that up that looks like:

Flight Paris to Iceland: $80 for seats, $100 for bags
Flight Iceland to Boston: $80 for seats, assume that you don't pay twice for bags

That's $260 of extra fees on top of 4, $780 tickets - this makes the effective price of each ticket $845

Have I missed anything? Is this consistent with what you have experienced? Anything else I need to know about WOW airlines?

Thanks,

Matt

Everything is a la carte too (e.g., no food or even snacks or drinks are included). And I believe - you should verify - that you do pay twice for everything. So I think it'll be:

$780 per ticket, $80 for reserved seats BOS-KEF, $80 for reserved seats KEF-CDG, $80 for reserved seats CDG -KEF, $80 for KEF-BOS, and $100 for bags at least from BOS to CDG and CDG to BOS (I'm not sure if you have to pay for those per leg or for the full flight).

We haven't flown WOW, but took Icelandair from Denver to Keflavik this past spring. As Steve notes, they charge for food purchased on board, but you're also welcome to bring TSA-compliant meals on board. We picked up take-away food beforehand and enjoyed it on our flights to Iceland and back home to the USA.

Iceland both ways is $990, so a functional difference of $100 per ticket (when you factor in the a la carte costs) or $400 total for the 4 of us. Basically, we've decided that the $780 /$845 (with extras fare) is not worth jumping on this early as we have other vacation options we are considering. If it was a straight up $780 with no baggage and seat assignment fees, we would buy it.

We flew IcelandAir this past summer and it was fine for the price. No frills but met our expectations. I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again and may do so in summer 2016.

Thanks everyone for your input.

With two kids, I personally would think that a fare which includes a DIRECT flight & includes seat selection and baggage would be far better value, even it costs a bit more initially.

Although not frequent, technical issues with aircraft do arise. With a carrier like WOW, with only one flight per day, KEF to Paris or Boston, a connection that doesn't happen costs you a day. They will not place you on another airline's flight.
