Traveling to Paris with a friend in July 2012. Will only be there for 2 days. Any suggestions on a hotel conveniently located for sightseeing would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions on "must sees" for the short stay. Thank you in advance!
Practically any hotel within walking distance of a metro station is "conveniently located for sightseeing". What is your budget for your two night stay?
Preferably under $200 USD per night. Thanks!
You need to get a guidebook; start with Rick Steves Paris. All guidebooks will have large lists of hotels in central areas, and will also have "if you have two days in Paris" suggested itineraries. What Norma said is true, technically, but for most standard sightseeing, a hotel in the 4th, 5th, or 6th districts would be convenient, as you could walk to more sights. If saving money is important, however, be aware that hotels in these areas can be more expensive for what you get than hotels further out. One caveat about Ricks' book: he loves the Rue Cler area, but not everyone else does. So, you may want to supplement his hotel lists with other books. He does list hotels near the Odeon and Luxembourg Gardens, and in the Marais - both of these, in my opinion, are much better locations to stay. Once you have tentative plans or some possible hotels, if you post specifics here, people can then be very helpful in narrowing down your choices.
Have a look at the Hotel Ideal on rue Emile-Zola in the 15th. It is well within your price range, in a mixed residential-commercial neighbourhood and Bus No. 42 stops a few meters away. You can take the 42 to the centre of Paris passing (or not passing, as you choose) the Tour Eiffel on your way. Let everyone else stay in the 4th, 5th or 7th and pay too much.
Thank you to everyone for the helpful replies!
Hotel Port Doree...It is away from central Paris on a huge park. Only 2 Metro changes to Notre Dame. Affordable; owners are helpful getting you transportation, etc. Near the Metro and a great bakery!
We have stayed twice at the Hotel Castex in the Marais. Wonderful location near restaurants & cafes, very very close to Isle St Louis, a few minutes walk to Notre Dame. Staff were very helpful and the AC worked very well, a consideration for July. Check out their website as the photos are an accurate depiction of the hotel.
Hotel Eugenie, is very very central. clean basis rooms, staff are nice, a/c and mini fridge in room. A few english tv channels. Right between the 5th( latin Quarter ) and the 6th( StGermain) .. cafes and shops right out the door, 5 minutes to Notre Dame.
