We've debated before about which countries were friendly and which were not. I thought this was interesting:

Thanks for the link! This is what I personally think.I found Austria to be very friendly! Salzburg has such happy people there, and a big city like Vienna was very friendly too. These are the only two places I've been in Austria, and I don't know about the rest of the country, but I left there with such warmth for these people.
The most unfriendly so far has been Prague, and I mean very nasty people there! Prague is beautiful, and I'm glad I went there, but I can't say much for the locals.
We have some wonderful Austrians here on this forum!
No Luxembourg? Probably not enough people to complete the survey :)
Thank you :-))
While pretentious, I assume that you spoke to me as well.
Of course, I am wickedly biased,
but, it's true: we Austrians are pretty laid back and friendly,
and among that friendly batch, we Wachauers are known as having the sunniest dispositions within Austria.
Pretty easy, considering that we have Southern exposure, and marvelous wine to boot. Who wouldn't be smiling? ;-))
I spent 2 weeks in Austria in the lovely village of St. Anton am Arlberg. The town folk and especially the family who owned and ran our pension were so friendly and welcoming. Those are fond memories! We also went to Salzburg and found them the same. In a few weeks I'll be in Vienna visiting a friend who now lives there and started a restaurant. Can't wait.
Corinna, yes, I was speaking of you as well, of course!
Lee, You will have a wonderful time in Vienna! It's a big city filled with charm!
Yay Canada!
Australia, Mexico, American Samoa and Ireland are the places I've been so far where the locals were overwhelmingly friendly. I have, however, a lot of countries left to visit.
It's funny, in our three trips to Europe over the past year and a half the nicest people we met--either by coincidence or God knows what--have been FRENCH PEOPLE ON VACATION! So I vote for the French traveling abroad. But when we visit France next year, I'll surely report back.
My experience has been that the French people are very friendly - in both urban and rural areas. It may help that I can converse pretty well in French (not fluent, but close). I even found the waiters to be pleasant. And a couple women came to my aid when I was having trouble with some transportation issues and helped me out. I'm not sure where the idea came from that the French are rude, but likely it may have been from people who were being obnoxious themselves (?).
We met a couple of really nice French guys a couple of summers ago on vacation in the SW. They and my husband swapped tips on what to see and where to go. They were great ambassadors for their country. On the other hand, some French teenagers were making fun of my paleness on a bus in Zion National Park, not knowing I took 3 years of French in school!
Cate,, come one, no one can count teenagers,, LOL
I vote for Croatia!
I absolutely love the people there! I love their Joie de Vivre, their hospitality and their friendliness.
The Croatian coast is one of my favorite places on earth.
Pat, I agree- I don't really count teenagers. I was just mad that they were so loud and obnoxious, and I could understand them! LOL.
Hi Amy and other R S people, great post!
I have to disagree with Corinna. I think the people from Krems, Wachau Austria are the most friendly. Just having some fun Corinna!
Monte
Thank you, Susan & Monty :-))
That was totally out of left field, but very, very sweet.
You just made my day :-))
All of them. They're all as friendly as I try to be.
One of the reasons that I've gone back to Scotland so much is that the people have been truly friendly. The only unfriendly Scots I've encountered were ones I encountered virtually by reading the Scotsman article forums where the posters can be quite virulent SNP'ers. But I've never seen anyone like that in person in Scotland. Probably too busy posting to forums. ; )

The only time I can remember someone being rude in another country, was when I was stationed in the Air Force in Germany, 20 years ago. I went Volksmarching just over the border into France, tiny little village. I went by myself. After the walk, I got something to eat in the building where all the other walkers were eating and drinking. Some middle aged man was sitting near me with a friend saying very loudly in English that we Americans should all go home. He just went on and on and his friend kept trying to shush him.
There are many places yet to visit so my answer may change over time but so far, the friendliest people I have met in my travels have been the Portugese and the Maltese.
I was in Turkey last fall and found most of the people to be extremely friendly and hospitable. Of course one should never, NEVER, make eye contact with carpet salesman, whatever you do. :) Other than that, I have nothing but fond memories.
