wire-mesh bags for securing backpacking packs

I was told to purchase a wire-mesh bag (?) for my backpacking trip. Apparently they are perfect for putting a backpacking pack in because the holes are small enough that the backpack cannot be opened and items removed and they can be secured to a bunk-bed, heater, etc. in the hostel during the day if the hostel does not provide lockers. However, I have no idea where to find something of the like. Anyone have any suggestions....or any experience using them?

A good shop which caters to the intrepid backpacking sector will have them. They are an Australian invention - so many of our young adults do the backpacking thing for months or even much longer. www.paddypallin.com.au has a mesh cover for AU$110.

Those things weigh a LOT. Check the weight before you buy. In hostels, most people use a combination of money belts (even when you sleep) and locks on luggage (to deter), and hostel lockers (if available).

Expensive items, such computers, don't fit well with the hostel lifestyle. If all you have in your backpack is clothes, people won't steal.

Jena, I carry a small PacSafe. It doesn't weigh that much and it easily makes the cut size-wise even though I travel with only two carry-on size bags... The small PacSafe is the correct size for a carry-on size bag.

I travel with expensive camera gear and sometimes there is not a good place to secure my stuff; the PacSafe is well worth the slight increase in weight for the peace of mind it brings me.
