winter weather

I love Rick Steves' guides, but most of the information is geared toward spring/summer/fall travel. Any input on travel in December/January? We're doing Prague, Salzburg, Venice, northern Italy and Paris. One big question: what's the most attractive/least problematic route from Milan to Paris in the middle of winter with a Eurail pass?

Weather in Salzburg and Prague will be much like what you have at home, with perhaps a bit more snow. I lived in Salzburg over a winter and it was never really bitterly cold. It also didn't snow a whole lot, partly because Salzburg is on a plateau surrounded by the Alps and it misses some of the worst weather. On the whole, winter in central Europe is a lot like I am used to in central Illinois -- some sunny cold days, some snow, some overcast days, maybe some rain.
