Winter Itinerary - Frankfurt and around

Hey folks! I'm planning to be in Europe Dec 22 - Jan 5, landing in Frankfurt and leaving from Frankfurt as well so need to do a circular trip.

Interest - I wanted to include some cute places in Rhine Valley, Prague, perhaps Vienna. May be put in a bit of the Alps to see some mountains. So a mix of cities and charming small towns.
Places I've visited already - Paris, Munich/Bavarian castles/Salzburg area and a lot of Switzerland.

I'm struggling with finding good trains that may connect some of these :(

Any suggestions on a winter itinerary?

Thanks a lot :)

And we also need to know whether you're flying out of Frankfurt.

Go to the websites of the national rail carriers:

Deutsche Bahn for Germany.

ÖBB for Austria

Czech Railways for the Czech Republic (although you may not end up using them if you only visit Prague).

Just keep in mind that daylight hours will be very short compared to summer, so keep expectations a bit more limited in the countryside.

If you want to visit the Alps in snow, consider Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald or Bercthesgaden.

Cute places near Frankfurt and the Rhine would be Eltville on the Rhine with the neighboring Eberbach Monastery, Limburg, Marburg, Idstein, Büdingen or Gelnhausen. All within one hour by train from Frankfurt.
You might want to spend some time in Frankfurt itself as the city is chock full of historical sites covering all eras of German history, as it is one of the older cities of Germany. In case of cold, rainy, or snowy weather you might find some of the varied museums of interest.

We are flying in and out of Frankfurt Dec 16-Jan1....

We decided to go to Nuremberg, Vienna, Prague and Berlin. We thought about doing some mountains and snow, but it was hard to get there via train and I just couldn't make it work (we didn't want to go to Munich since we had been). Both Prague and Berlin had decent choices for after-Christmas markets so that's why we chose those. Plus we figured bigger cities, there would be more to do if the weather was bad. :)

Have fun!

Thanks so much all of you! What would be a close enough mountain spot in Austrian alps to Vienna? And haha I've also been trying to look for a hotel that has a jacuzzi/heated pool with a view of snow/mountains ;) just in case any of you might know..

Kim, sounds like we have very similar trips! How are you traveling between Nuremberg -> Prague -> Vienna?

Using the technical geologic definition of the Alps, the landform extends all the way to Vienna' western and southeastern suburbs. However, the mountains begin to substantially taper far to the west, so by the time you get to Vienna, the "Alps" remain little more than hills. The high peaks you probably have in mind are mostly in the federal states of Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburgerland and Kärnten. All much more accessible from Munich and Salzburg than Vienna.

The high altitude ski resort of Obertauern has no shortage of hotels with indoor heated pools, although it's a bit tricky to reach without a car and there's not much to do if you don't ski. Kitzbühel sits at a much lower altitude, but probably offers more activities for non-skiers, and it has good rail access. And there's certainly plenty of other resort towns easily accessible from Salzburg.
