Winter Italy-France-Spain Itinerary

Hi everyone. Below is my itinerary that Chatgpt helped me draw up.

Some details:
- I can go basically any time in November/December.
- Will be for solo travel.
- I am a 23 year old Male. Keen on culture, art, history etc. but also some partying and meeting new people.
- Main restriction is budget, but I can add a day or two if necessary (i.e. if you say you would highly recommend adding X or adding a day at a place).
- Plan is to live very cheap and backpack and eat out of supermarkets/prepare own food as much as possible.
- I will probably add a day or two, to spend more time in Madrid/Barcelona or even another day in Lyon. Lyon has lights festival that time which looks cool.

What i’d like advice on is as follows and any additional critique/advice you may have:
- Recommendations on itinerary
- How realistic is a budget (excluding departure and arrival flights) of 2000€? (I.e. 71€ per day)

Some ideas I’ve been thinking of:

  • Remove Venice and add days elsewhere (maybe then just do a day trip from Florence). Partly because it’s so expensive as well.
    • Delete France and add northern Spain (Bilbao/San Sebastian). This saves a lot of travelling and some cost (since Paris is expensive).

Your trip has way too much travel. You have about 5 weeks for three countries.

1) I suggest eliminating some places and spending more time in some of your locations. Four days in Rome isn't four full days, since your arrival is on the first day and departure on the fourth day. You probably have two full days and fractions of days as well. I have been to Rome and did 6 nights there and still didn't see it all. Also, Venice, two days with a flight to Paris, waiting at airport, etc. lots of wasted time.

2) Consider skipping Paris and Lyon and fly direct from Venice to Barcelona or take the train to Nice and spend a couple of days in the South of France on your way to Barcelona.

3) Madrid, 3 days, is probably good for that city, but you are missing one of the BEST cities in Spain, Toledo, 500 years ago it was the Capital of Spain and the city is very well preserved. At least do a day trip there. Also, north of Madrid is Segovia, with an amazing 1800 year old intact Roman aqueduct, demanding another day trip.

Where are you flying home from in Spain. Malaga has a large airport, but then Granada is some distance from Malaga.

71€ per day is your budget for a day. Have you factored into the total cost all the travel you have planned?

Your plan includes all fairly expensive cities. I have never done hostels, but absolutely hate to do that, even if I was young and backpacking.
Your hostel in Venice is in Mestre, so that adds more expense getting to Venice proper. Also, it reduces the joy of staying in Venice.
Have you factored in any admission costs for some places.
Can you make reservations at hostels?
As for dining, you can save by going to markets and buying food there, but frankly, I thin your estimate is way too low.

You're just 23 and planning a European vacation--good for you! I'm excited for you.

If I were you, i'd add up all the entrance fees for the sights you want to visit. Those are known factors. Also, you need to know how much your flights are going to cost. With those numbers in mind, then I'd make some decisions about where to visit.

martinvanderm,
Everyone has made some good suggestions. Even staying in hostels, your budget of 71 euros per day is really low (food, transportation, entrance fees, etc.). In 1974 Hubby and I did 4 months in Europe on the cheap, I mean REALLY cheap!, A $2.50 night room in Grasse, sleeping in our VW beetle some nights (in a pull-off of the autostrada, in a farmer's field, along the banks of the Loire river (with goats tethered nearby).
A total of 3 weeks was spent with Hubby's grandparents, but the rest of the time we went by Frommer's "Europe on Five and Ten Dollars A Day". Toward the end of the trip, on our drive back from Normandy to Grandmere's in Marseille, we had just enough money for the tolls. We kept driving by apple orchards, but they all had workers in them. Finally we happened upon an orchard with no workers, so we stole a couple of apples to eat. We thought they were a Granny Smith type, because they were green. Well, they were green because they weren't ripe! We ate them anyway. We arrived at Grandmere's about 9 that night and gobbled up the omelet she made us. We stayed in many very cheap places and had our share of beds with the absolutely worst mattresses ever! The sleeping bags we used sometimes were thin ones we bought for $5 each at a dept. store in Marseille. So cheap can be done, but remember, our trip was 50 years ago. We were 30 and 31, had our own VW we ordered from the US and picked up in Wolfsburg. Our gas expenses were probably less per day (in today's dollars) than your travel between cities will be, not counting local transport.

To conclude, maybe you could take a shorter trip, or try to find a way to up your funds to about 100 euros per day. It seems like a lot, but more than room and food are involved. Whatever you decide to do, a great adventure awaits you! Amusez-vous bien!
