Wi-Fi in Europe

How difficult is it to find free or inexpensive Wi-Fi hot spots in Europe - specifically Germany, Austria and Italy. Any information appreciated, thanks...

In Germany in any of the larger cities, it will be really easy to find. Don't know about the smaller towns. I know in Berlin they were talking about free wi-fi for the whole city.

In Berlin, Sony's headquarters complex at Potsdamer Platz offers free WiFi. Also, most McDonalds and Starbucks throughout Europe offer 30 minutes of free with a purchase, reasonable rates after that. But in my travels, I've found that you usually have to pay for WiFi, some hotels and cafes offer it for free but they are usually the exception. Free hotspots usually get overloaded and can be very slow.

I've stayed in 14 places (hotels, privatzimmer) in 4 weeks in Germany in the last two years. In half of the places (7) they had free Wifi; one other had a T-mobile pay Hotspot.

McDonalds, and most coffee shops will have free wifi as well as most hotels/pensions and hostels. It is everywhere and there is no need to pay for it. Some don't advertise it, but you will see some places with a sign saying free wifi.

one thing I have noticed is that most hostels have free wifi but is you used the hostels computers you would have to pay for the internet. I should go into the business of renting out my laptop and underdogging the owners..kidding.

I am in Italy right now had the same question before we left
What I've found out. Yes, there is free wireless and in crazy places

We had free access in Calamarara but not in Genoa at our hotels
I found access in my hotel in Turin, but I'm pretty sure it came from someone's unsecured computer
I've been using my iPhone for Internet and am on it right now-but I paid 5 euro for 12 hours

It's kind of a seek and find. If you keep looking you might find access. It is not across the board available
