Why are some posters "formerly," "ressurected," etc?

Not widespread but lightly sprinkled here and there. Thanks!

I believe they have changed their screen names and want people to connect them to their prior posts. I don't think it's a system setting, I think people add the designations themselves.

Many news boards have rules against having two names at once (“sock puppet”) so it is important to be assertively accurate.

I get the sock puppet problem, but why would you want to have two usernames that are basically identical, but have a note that you were formerly something very similar? Why not just be the original one?

other people have been many-year contributors with an established reputation and sometimes somebody comes along and uses the same name - but from somewhere else - so the first person in order to maintain uniqueness changes or modifies their name which avoids confusion (but is a pain in the neck).

I, myself, am contemplating changing my name because somebody new has come along using (probably their own name, like me) the same name as me.

Since I am fastidious with detail and accuracy I don't want to be creating confusion.

But it is such a pain I haven't done that yet....

When I first started on this board years ago, there already was a "Frank" (from Colorado). So I adopted the moniker "Frank II" although I am not a second, junior or member of a royal household.

However, if Mr. E was "resurrected" do we have to start singing...."Mr. E, Superstar?"

You mean you haven't been already ???

I originally signed up as Liz and was surprised it hadn't been taken already. When I realized names could be used even if others were already using the name I changed it. I would assume anything you are seeing was chosen by the poster themselves.

I am in the Nigel boat, except that I already jumped ship. I signed on as Travelmom. When another came along, and even someone who should know my style of post got confused and the other person didn’t seem to care, I figured it was time to edit my user name. I am sure I confused people for a bit - but it was already confusing.

Not asking for changes, but yes, I dislike that two (or more) people can have the same user name.

That’s not exactly what you asked, though. People can change or edit their user name at any time.

Nigel, Are you saying you’re contemplating a change to your name but, at this point, it’s just the concept of a plan?

Ha ha, Kenko!!

I also think that user names should not be able to be duplicated. I'm lucky (I guess) in that there aren't too many people with my name out there.

Nigel, I think you should be 'Nigel I' since you are the premier Nigel on the forum.

I like "Nigel of Northamptonshire". It sounds like there is a title and a manor involved.

I vote for Lord Nigel.

As far as I know, and I’ve been here about 18 years, I was the first Andrea. Now there are at least three. Hopefully people don’t get us confused and I do mention my location to hopefully avoid confusion. I’m not changing my name.

Ooooh, I vote for Sir Nigel or Lord Nigel! I feel like we could bestow the title! I love Nigel the First of England but am unwilling to type it. LOL!

Mr. É, as I recall, you thinking the other person was me was the final straw…..

Y'all are going to contribute to the upkeep of Nigel of Northamptonshire's estates, right? He'll need the economic capability of an Earl of Northumberland or something.

I was just Jo on here for many years and then another Jo showed up, so I changed mine to Ms. Jo.

Same happened to me.
I was a very frequent poster here, when along came someone with the same name. Not only that, but she lived the same city! She disappeared fairly quickly, but while she was here it was very confusing.
