Why are Airbnb reviews universally positive? What if the Airbnb host is doing something illegal?

I would like to share a review of Airbnb that I posted yesterday after a long drawn-out, non-resolved back-and-forth with Airbnb.

My question now is how to avoid Airbnb altogether in the future. Plum Village apparently has gone out of business.

When my husband & I wanted an apartment type lodging for a longer stay in a location in Spain, I went through Booking.com. Booking sends out the link afterwords to post the review, so their reviews show the good and not so good.

I remember that one of them in 2024 had some reservation details that were typical of an AirBnB guest that we didn’t have to do as a Booking.com guest.

Denny, are you sure you didn't mean Plum Guide?

If it's apartments you're looking for, have you also taken a look at rentals on booking.com?

".... who was emotionally abusive and barged into my apartment twice (on specious grounds) in large part due to my race. "

While it certainly would be troubling to have the host enter a rental uninvited - I would have been startled tool - I'm curious what sort of race-based abuse you endured? And how did she physically block you from leaving your apartment when she "wanted to immediately show you something" and run out to "get a new router/network"? Sorry that your stay was so traumatizing.

Denny, I know you have to tread lightly when giving reviews on Airbnb. I try to balance the review by providing positive along with negative points. You must have liked something about the rental if you stayed the full 22 days.

Did you call Airbnb when the host demanded more money? Did you call Airbnb within 72 hours of arrival to voice your issues? How did the host physically block you from leaving

when she finally decided to run out and get a new router/network?

Perhaps post the listing here and someone may see some red flags that you missed prior to booking.

We rented an apartment in Paris through Airbnb last September/October for a month. While I gave them a 5* review I also mentioned a few things that could be problematic for some people, such as a very low ceiling in the bedroom and bathroom. The Host responded and was a bit defensive. There wasn’t anything wrong with the apartment, but if we had been taller it would have uncomfortable. Anyway, I just checked and my review is still there just as I wrote it.
